Fun space caper

January 5, 2018 by Dome'Loki 3 Comments

Artemis is the second published novel of Andy Weir, of The Martian fame.  The book is titled after the city Artemis, the only city on the Moon in the near future.  With about 2,000 residents Artemis is tiny and mostly dependent on its tourism industry.  People save up for trips to the Moon to be able to experience lunar gravity and see the historic site of the Apollo 11 landing.  Artemis is brought to life by it’s narrator,  Jasmine (Jazz) Bashara, Saudi born but raised on the Moon […]

Comfort re-read #2.

December 28, 2017 by narfna Leave a Comment

Another comfort re-read. I’m beginning to sense a pattern here. I read the hardcover this time, but weirdly, I still heard the audiobook narrator’s voice in my head the whole time. I listened to that back in 2014, so I guess he was just a super memorable narrator. Thankfully, I did NOT have Matt Damon in my head in any form. Though, weirdly, all the other actors from the movie were there. Except for the main character (and Venkat Kapoor, whose race they just changed […]

Adventures of an Ethical Criminal

November 30, 2017 by Emmalita 5 Comments

Jasmine “Jazz” Bashara has lived in Artemis, the only lunar city, since she was 6. When we meet Jazz, she is in the process of failing her EVA Master exam, because she bought a used EVA suit and a piece of safety equipment has failed. Jazz is always looking to make money, and being able to take tourists from Earth on lunar tours outside the bubble would really set her up. Things don’t go according to plan. That’s a pattern in Jazz’ life – she’s […]

Is this as good as The Martian?

November 19, 2017 by ingres77 5 Comments

I read Ready Player One in pretty close proximity to The Martian (read before I joined CBR), and they were two of the more entertaining reads of the last few years. When Ernest Cline published Armada, I was out of my mind with anticipation. While I didn’t expect it to be another Ready Player One, I did get my hopes up. And, like a lot of people, was let down. So, since The Martian is so indelibly connected to Ready Player One, in my mind, […]

Here am I sitting in a tin can

November 11, 2017 by octothorp Leave a Comment

Writing this review from my husband’s truck because a) sleeping baby and b) that’s where I found the book after accidentally marooning it in the door panel (appropriate, misplacing this book, no?) and had to finish it ASAP. It’s a testament to Weir’s skill at crafting a tale that I couldn’t wait to finish it despite knowing all the story beats from having watched the movie first. I even got anxious that the probe I knew would fail from having literally watched it explode on […]

Constraint is creativity

February 2, 2017 by FyreHaar 10 Comments

Wow. I was struck speechless by this book. Mark Watney is stuck on Mars. His crew thinks he is dead. He knows another mission should arrive in about four years. It’s an equation. X food + Y Oxygen – Z Carbon Dioxide + A Water = B Survival Solve for all variables. Inputs to the matrix include available tools and materials, constraints include limited living space, a longer mission time than anything you’re working with was ever designed to function, and a planetary environment that […]
