Action, Adventure, Witcher-ing

Blood of Elves by Andrzej Sapkowski

The Time of Contempt by Andrzej Sapkowski

Baptism of Fire by Andrzej Sapkowski

The Tower of the Swallows by Andrzej Sapkowski

The Lady of the Lake by Andrzej Sapkowski

I started on the Witcher Saga by Andrzej Sapkowski a while ago, after hearing that it was going to be adapted into a Netflix series. After watching (and enjoying!) the first season, I thought I would get around to finishing the series eventually, but it took watching (and enjoying!) the second season before I really got my act together to work my way through the rest of the books.  Overall, I enjoyed each of these books. I thought that the balance of humor and action […]

The Lady of the Lake

The Lady of the Lake by Andrzej Sapkowski

The final Witcher novel, and phew, I hate to say it, but I am glad I am done. The Witcher is a very good and very frustrating series to read. I will try to explain. In this novel, we have two distinctly different frame stories happening at the same time. We are far into the future for both of them, and we know one character that is still around, and none of the others. But it also means that all the others are likely dead, […]

Tower of Swallows

Tower of Swallows by Andrzej Sapkowski

In the audiobook of the Witcher books, the narrator pronounces “Dandelion” not like the flower, but as “Dan Dell Eon”. It’s weird and off-putting. It made me wonder two things for the first time in the series. One, is that really how British people say that, and I think the answer is: no. Two, why is that his name? It turns out that the character’s Polish name is Jaskier, which is also what he’s called in the show. This means Buttercup. I wondered after this […]

Baptism of Fire

Baptism of Fire by Andrzej Sapkowski

This is the third of the Witcher novels, and the sixth book of the series I have read now, having completed the two story collections, the digressive novel Season of Storms, and the first two of the main storyline. The throughlines of this book: Triss, Philippa, Keira and other witches are banding together to maybe form a matriarchy? Ciri is in hiding, having joined a roving band, helping her solve the mystery of her past and future? Dykstra is plotting (go figure).   As far […]

Some stuff

Season of Storms by Andrzej Sapkowski

Porterhouse Blue by Tom Sharpe

Everything that Rises Must Converge by Flannery O'Connor

Season of Storms – 4/5 Stars If I haven’t said it before, I really like the sidequests more than the main quest. So far I have read the first two main novels, this novel which is a bit of a prequel, and the two story collections, but of which tell of previous adventures and previous meetings. I would gladly read many more novels and collections that move away from the main story for a few reasons. One, the main story is often focused on political […]

The Time of Contempt

The Time of Contempt by Andrzej Sapkowski

February 14, 2022 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

This is book two in the main series of Witcher books. What’s still fascinating in this series to me is how much the Watcher, Geralt of Rivia, does not factor into the book. Because I’ve played Witcher 3 and in the game he’s not only the main character, but you’re literally playing as him, this has a little disconnect with the books. The game does intimate repeatedly that the Witcher is a kind of free-lance or free agent, and that larger events are always happening […]
