The Kopp Sisters

Miss Kopp’s Midnight Confessions by Amy Stewart

June 29, 2023 by Owlizabeth Leave a Comment

It’s been so long since I listened to the first two books in this series, I was worried that coming back would be confusing or disappointing. Luckily, Amy Stewart has built such strong characters that it only took a few minutes to get reoriented to the world of the Kopp sisters. And while I’d definitely recommend reading the series from the beginning, this could be read on its own. The Kopp sisters were actual people. Constance is the first lady sheriff’s deputy of Bergen County, […]

“She’s not a regular lady”

Girl Waits with Gun by Amy Stewart

November 17, 2019 by KimMiE" Leave a Comment

Girl Waits with Gun is a charming historical fiction novel based on true events. Amy Stewart sources articles from early 20th century newspapers including the Philadelphia Sun, the Bergen County Evening-Record, and the New York Times, mingles facts with her own imagination, and gives us a sometimes harrowing, often funny suspense tale starring a top-notch heroine. The Kopp sisters are three women living alone on a farm in 1914 New Jersey after the death of their mother. In spite of their brother Francis’s pleas to […]

Drunk History in a book

January 30, 2017 by Rachie3879 2 Comments

To kick off 2017 with a bang, I read Amy Stewart’s Girl Waits with Gun. Stewart tells the story of the Kopp sisters and their ill-fated car and buggy accident with a New Jersey silk magnate, Henry Kaufman, in the early parts of the 20th century. Viewers of Comedy Central’s delightful show “Drunk History” might have familiarity with this story – this very run-in was hilariously covered in the most recent season. The Kopp sisters – Constance, Norma and Fleurette – live alone on their […]

How to be a bad-ass in 1914

January 12, 2017 by Bothari43 2 Comments

I’ve been reading a lot of grim and/or heavy books lately, or grad school textbooks (snooooore), so Girl Waits with Gun was an excellent reminder that books can be fun. I fell madly in love with Constance by page five, and spent the rest of the book wishing we could be best friends. The three Kopp sisters (Constance, stolid Norma, shallow Fleurette) live on a farm in New Jersey in 1914. It’s unusual at the time for women to be left totally to their own […]

From recluse to badass in one novel

December 17, 2015 by yesknopemaybe 1 Comment

4.5 stars. This book had me enthralled from start to finish. In Girl Waits With Gun, Amy Stewart tells the fictionalized story of a real life woman who was one of the first female deputies. The story is basically Constance Kopp’s origin story. Events start before she’d ever dreamed of entering law enforcement in 1914 when a rich silk man, Henry Kaufman, rams into the Kopp sister’s carriage. Much of the town witnessed this accident and it’s well established that Kaufman was at fault, so […]
