Breath of Fire is the second book in Amanda Bouchet’s Kingmaker Chronicles series. This novel picks up moments after the end of book one with our heroine, Catalia Fisa, healing from deadly wounds. She has a knack for playing fast and loose with her life, much to the chagrin of her lover Griffin. Cat is the Kingmaker, she can detect lies from anyone. Possession of her is quite handy for anyone in power. Cat’s mother, Alpha Fisa, would rather manipulate her powers to maintain her iron fist upon […]
The fire’s starting to die out a bit now
3.5 stars Spoiler warning! This is the third and final book in the trilogy, and will without a doubt contain spoilers for the earlier books in the series. Don’t read this review if you want to remain unspoiled and aren’t caught up with the previous two books. If you want to start at the beginning, book 1 (by far the best book in the series) is A Promise of Fire. Cat and her warlord husband Griffin have defeated the rulers of tyrannical Tarva and united two thirds […]
Prophecies, magic and lust
A Promise of Fire is the first entry in Amanda Bouchet’s Kingmaker Chronicles. Our heroine protagonist, Cat, has been on the run for the past 8 years. At the start of this novel, she blends in with a magical circus. She tells fortunes and does fire tricks to pay her way. The circus becomes her adopted family with Cat helping out with performances from time to time. Things were going pretty well until a strange man catches her eye. He gives off the aura of a warrior […]
Two Failed Romance Novels
I read both the main pick and the alt pick for Vaginal Fantasy this month, I wanted very much to like them both as they both sounded so interesting. I ended up hating both, though for two very different reasons. A Promise of Fire was the main pick this month, and like I said, I wanted to like this novel. I enjoyed the bits and pieces that made up the story around the romance, but ultimately I just couldn’t deal with the romance. Unfortunately the […]
I Didn’t Review This Last Year
After reading Malin’s rave review of A Promise of Fire last year, I read the book but for some reason I didn’t review it. I have no idea why. Last year was a weird year. I enjoyed the book last year and even more when I reread it a few days ago. As I was writing my review of Breath of Fire, I realized I hadn’t written this review last year. The Kingmaker Chronicals are set in a land called Thalyria, which is broken into three […]
Middle Books are Hard
My biggest problem with this book is that I have to wait 11 months for the next one. I do have other problems with the book, but while I’m griping and picking, keep in mind that my biggest resentment is the wait for more. I really enjoyed the first book of the series, and I still enjoyed both the characters and the writing in this one. Cat, Griffin, his family and Beta Team are lively and interesting characters. Breath of Fire, as a whole, didn’t hang […]
