“My whole life I had hated the magic world. I knew grigoris were unreliable and dangerous, if not outright evil. Now I was surrounded by the very thing I hated. But I’d gotten myself into this fix. I had to get myself out.”

An Easy Death by Charlaine Harris

In one word: Surprising Cannonball Read Bingo: Rec’d At the last Cannonball Read Zoom, we did the ol’ “what are you reading” merry-go-round, and our fearless organizer, MsWas mentioned this book. I read and enjoyed the Sookie Stackhouse series and as recommenders go, she’s got high marks so I immediately put this one on the reserve list at the library. Firstly, look at this cover? Young lady gunslinger? YES PLEASE. I was excited from page one and this book held my attention and enthusiasm almost […]

I can’t fully get on board the Underground Railroad

The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead

April 25, 2021 by KimMiE" Leave a Comment

Colson Whitehead’s Underground Railroad won both the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the 2016 National Book Award for Fiction, and part of me is sheepish that I can’t get behind that level of admiration. While the novel is powerful and at times poignant, I had a fundamental issue with its execution. The novel focuses on Cora, a young slave on a Georgia cotton plantation whose mother was infamous for having been the only slave to ever escape that estate. Cora is an outcast even […]

The most enjoyable book I’ve read so far this year

Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

July 17, 2019 by Malin Leave a Comment

#CBR11 Bingo: I Love This First Son Alex Claremont-Diaz is the closest thing to a prince this side of the Atlantic. With his intrepid sister and the Veep’s genius granddaughter, they’re the White House Trio, a beautiful millennial marketing strategy for his mother, President Ellen Claremont. International socialite duties do have downsides—namely, when photos of a confrontation with his longtime nemesis Prince Henry at a royal wedding leak to the tabloids and threaten American/British relations. The plan for damage control: staging a fake friendship between […]

Too much dry travel writing, not enough DRAGONS for my taste

April 11, 2017 by Malin Leave a Comment

3.5 stars Purported to be the first of Lady Isabella Trent’s journals, chronicling her life-long exploration of the world and its dragons, this book is a historical novel set in an alternate universe, where dragons obviously exist. I’m unsure of whether the time period in these books would be the Regency or more like Victorian times in our history, but the fictional country that our protagonist, Lady Isabella is from, is clearly modelled on historical England. We follow our heroine from childhood, where we learn […]
