Marvel Female Super Heroes: a primer

Marvel: Fearless and Fantastic - Female Super Heroes Save the World by Sam Maggs, Emma Grange, and Ruth Amos

April 23, 2019 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

Our household is deep in super hero fandom but our actual knowledge is kind of sketchy, as it’s a mismash of cartoons from different eras and the various movies.  Because of this we are more familiar with DC female super heroes (Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Batgirl, etc.) and knew only a few Marvel female supers.  But that has been changing as we have found Ms. Marvel and Squirrel Girl comics and now the Captain Marvel movie.  We’re excited to learn about more female supers that fight […]

This book is delightful, and now I want a tea dragon

October 24, 2018 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

I don’t remember where I first heard about The Tea Dragon Society but I was instantly hooked by the name, as it contains two of my favorite things, tea and dragons.  While taking my ten year old gift book shopping (we always give books as birthday presents), I pointed out The Tea Dragon Society and said that I really wanted it.  She remembered and gave it to me for my birthday this past weekend! Katie O’Neill wrote an endearing story with charming, beautiful illustrations and wonderful characters.  The story […]

Narwhal and Jellyfish have delightful adventures – CBR10 Bingo: Award Winner

October 6, 2018 by Dome'Loki 4 Comments

My 6 year old daughter LOVES narwhals and was thrilled when Grandma gave her Narwhal: Unicorn of the Sea. It is a Will Eisner award winning graphic novel and marks off the “Award Winner” bingo square!  The book is made of three stories in which a happy go lucky narwhal and a no nonsense jellyfish learn about friendship, working together, and the power of imagination. One day a narwhal finds itself in strange waters and encounters a creature it has never seen before, a jellyfish.  The […]

Barkonauts are the best!

October 1, 2018 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

Greg Van Eekhout is now one of my favorite authors thanks to his Daniel Blackland series, starting with California Bones.  In it he created a fascinating magic system called osteomancy, where one gets magical properties through consuming the remains of magical creatures.  Magical creatures also being fellow spell casters.  Not exactly fit for the tween and under set.  However, Greg has just had Voyage of the Dogs come out and it is all ages. If you know a child that loves dogs and thinks outer space […]

Where in I gush about Squirrel Girl, again

August 27, 2018 by Dome'Loki 2 Comments

Just like my mix-up with Ms. Marvel, I accidentally skipped a book and read volume 3 of The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl: Squirrel You Really Got Me Now before reading volume 2, Squirrel You Know it’s True.  Fortunately, missing two did not affect my enjoyment of three, as both books have contained story lines.  However, catching up by reading two did give me a few “ah ha” moments of now understanding references in three. All three Squirrel Girl graphic novels, that I have read so far, written by Ryan […]

Read out of order, stood on its own

August 17, 2018 by Dome'Loki 1 Comment

When I picked this up to read I was confident I had read Ms. Marvel Vol. 3.  Oops, I was wrong about that, darn fickle memory.  Even though I was missing 4 issues of backstory, this collection was self contained and gave enough information through dialog that I got on just fine.  Kamala Khan as Ms. Marvel continues to be my other new favorite superhero (right alongside Squirrel Girl).  While other supers are associated with more glamorous cities, Ms. Marvel is the protector of Jersey […]
