Area 510 by Lee Loughridge

August 1, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I am assuming that Area 510 is book one in an “unknown amount” of a series by Lee Loughridge, Jay Faerber, Justin Greenwood, and Thomas Mauer (I am assuming Greenwood has illustrated this graphic novel, and Mauer is a big name in the community that I am unfortunately unfamiliar with). But despite any short comings I might have when it comes to knowing the people who created Area 510 (the zip code of the area the story takes place) this is a great start to […]

Weird Kid by Greg Van Eekhout

July 11, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The main character in Weird Kid is an alien, therefore expect a comedy of errors to happen. There is an interesting story arch that shows that that things are a not to subtle representation of puberty and the changing we go through in middle school. It is very unbelievable (though there are two interesting pieces of realism that was surprising). It is also funny. An adult can forgive the bumps that occur as kids 10 and up will get a kick out of everything happening. […]

Drunk on All Your Strange New Words

“Now everyone will think she can’t cope with the demands of her job, just because she fell off a balcony.”

Drunk on All Your Strange New Words by Eddie Robson

July 5, 2022 by llamareadsbooks 2 Comments

For whatever reason, I love books about alien linguistics. Not necessarily first contact, but more in terms of the pitfalls and cultural quirks of learning an alien language and then interacting with those aliens, so when I saw that this book featured a linguist I jumped on it. The quote on the book calls it “weird” and well, yes, this is definitely a quirky mix of science fiction wrapped up in a murder mystery. “Now everyone will think she can’t cope with the demands of […]

Official book description: Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission – and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish. “Dealing with a crisis, wrapped in a disaster, surrounded by a mystery”

Dark Horse by Michelle Diener

April 25, 2022 by llamareadsbooks 1 Comment

I’m not usually a fan of alien abduction books, but I originally picked this up back in 2020 and it was absolute brain catnip. Watching these characters “dealing with a crisis, wrapped in a disaster, surrounded by a mystery” was ridiculously fun, so when I heard the final book in the series was coming out, I decided to dive back in and read the whole thing. Dav, captain of a Grih exploration ship, doesn’t know what to think when he encounters a Class 5 Tecran […]
