STEM romance novella

Under One Roof by Ali Hazelwood

November 12, 2022 by Sophia Leave a Comment

After we read The Love Hypothesis for book club, I found a trio of novellas also by Ali Hazelwood. I quickly decided that I needed to read these as well. So, now that I’ve finished Below Zero and Stuck With You, I was able to get Under One Roof (2022) by Hazelwood on audiobook. Like Hazelwood’s other books, Under One Roof involves a woman in STEM–Mara, an environmental engineer who works for the EPA–a hunky man, misunderstandings, and love in the end. Mara is best friends with the women who starred in the previous […]

“I love you, I think, and you are my home”

Love on the Brain by Ali Hazelwood

October 16, 2022 by Malin Leave a Comment

CBR14 Bingo: Mind (Bee, as well as Ms. Hazelwood herself, is a neuroscientist and there’s a whole lot of brain science happening in the book) Bee Köningswasser, a young pink-haired neuroscientist, is offered pretty much her dream job on a NASA project and accepts joyfully. Her excitement is cut short when she realises that while she’s the lead on the neuroscience part, her nemesis from grad school, Levi Ward, is the engineering lead on the same project. Nevertheless, Bee can feel herself wasting away in […]

Love on the Brain by Ali Hazelwood

The reason this book fell flat for me can be summed up by the author’s note at the back: This book is my hate letter to standardized testing. It’s also my love letter to neuroscience, Star Wars, women in STEM, friendships that hit rough patches but then try their best to bounce back, research assistants, interdisciplinary scientific collaborations, Elle Woods, ShitAcademicsSay, mermaids, hummingbird feeders, people who struggle with working out, and cats. It’s just…too much crammed into one novel, methinks, especially considering that Hazelwood has […]

Oh Olive…

The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood

September 1, 2022 by carmelpie Leave a Comment

I picked this up because it kept coming up in CBR14 reviews. After researching it a little bit, it seems that it is hugely popular. I was intrigued to find out what made it more than the average romcom-type romance. Plus I was very curious to find out whatever it has to do with ReyLo. Olive, a struggling biology grad student, kisses a random guy in her lab, her intent being to show her best friend that she has completely moved on from her ex […]

this one broke me

Below Zero by Ali Hazelwood

August 10, 2022 by wicherwill 6 Comments

For a short novel, a shorter review…but also this is probably the one that broke me. WHAT on earth is going on in this novel? Having read the original short story that inspired it, I would assume that an editor would do some casual research (or less-than-casual research, given that I assume these books have done very well for themselves) and create a situation that holds up to some scrutiny. Instead we are left with some laughably ridiculous romance set ups, even for Romancelandia where […]

A touch of science and romance

Below Zero by Ali Hazelwood

June 29, 2022 by Sophia Leave a Comment

After finding Ali Hazelwood through a recent book club book, I’ve been reading her trio of romantic STEM novellas. Below Zero (2022) is the second novella that I’ve read, and it has what I’ve come to expect from Hazelwood. There’s a smart science-y woman, a hunky hero, friendship, a misunderstanding, and in the end: a happily ever after. This one I listened to on Audiobook. Hannah has always known that she wants to work at NASA, and that knowledge has motivated her to succeed through a lot of schooling–even […]
