Extremely yes, very swoon.

A Lady For a Duke by Alexis Hall

November 2, 2022 by narfna 6 Comments

“I cannot meet him as a stranger. But he has never known me as myself.” I loved this so much I wish I could just drop everything I’m doing right now, including writing this review, and read it again. I honestly haven’t stopped thinking about it since July, and it is now November. I would need to re-read anyway to write a review that does it justice, with like, quotes and shit. As of right now, I’m thinking this review is just going to be […]

Re-re-reads count, don’t they?

Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall

Re-re-read in honor of Husband Material: Re-re-reading this book, especially after reading Husband Material, made me realize that it’s a five star book by me. While “Priya” the Muslim will never cease to exasperate me (to recap: Priya is a Hindu name, or more relevantly it’s not a kosher Muslim name because it is religious. While it does mean “beloved” it’s also a name used for a minor goddess, and as such would not be given to a practicing Muslim child. Google, my friend!) so much of […]

“You have to be quiet when you’re eavesdropping. Otherwise it’s just a logistically difficult conversation.”

A Lady for a Duke by Alexis Hall

Plot: Viola has had to make some very hard choices. Born a Viscount with oodles of money, land, and power, she nevertheless felt utterly miserable, until a near fatal injury on the battlefield in Waterloo gave her an opportunity to reinvent herself. Sure, she’s a penniless lady’s companion to her brother’s abrasive wife, but at least she gets to be herself. Also his wife (and her brother for that matter) is actually pretty wonderful and supportive and loving so all in all, not bad at all. Really, […]

A Trans-Austen Historical Romance

A Lady for a Duke by Alexis Hall

August 25, 2022 by Sofi Keren 5 Comments

I love reading Austen and the Brontë sisters. Jane Eyre is a favorite, even if Mr. Rochester is the worst and definitely killed his wife. But reading period romances used to remind me, in the back of my mind, that those stories weren’t written for people like me. It wouldn’t have been historically accurate for two queer people to get together and not be shunned by society, right? Or…maybe not. Gentleman Jack has been a breath of fresh air, with a main character based on […]

so very many thoughts about this book

Husband Material by Alexis Hall

August 23, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

CW: for the ongoing homophobia of Oliver’s family from last book I don’t mean to knock this book at all, but I will say that reading it (and wanting to give it a four) made me realize that Boyfriend Material should have been a five (that has been rectified, even before my re-read) (re-re-read, I should say). I would also recommend anyone who hasn’t re-(re-)read Boyfriend Material since it came out to re-read it before plunging into this novel. I went back and forth on whether I should–full disclosure, […]

A Lady for a Duke

“When I am with you, I feel about as far from anything that has ever hurt me as it is possible to be.”

A Lady for a Duke by Alexis Hall

July 3, 2022 by faintingviolet 2 Comments

After reading other Alexis Hall books earlier this year, the excellent Boyfriend Material and the quite good Something Fabulous, I became very excited for the promise of A Lady for a Duke. And that excitement was well placed, as I very much enjoyed this outing. While it didn’t quite reach the heights of Boyfriend Material for me, I felt Hall did a much better job with the tone of historical romance than he had in romp in Something Fabulous, even if the pacing bothered me […]
