B is for Ballad

The Ballad of Perilous Graves by Alex Jennings

August 3, 2025 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 1: “B” square I was in New Orleans in January for a work conference; the only time I went into the French Quarter was to visit a bookstore. On the local interest shelf there was one title I vaguely recognized: The Ballad of Perilous Graves. This was for the first half a generally interesting musical and magical realism kind of mystery in which local kids notice something is wrong with the spirit of the city of Nola and must then save everyone and everything […]

Everybody is sleeping on this one, and they shouldn’t be!!

The Ballad of Perilous Graves by Alex Jennings

This book was incredibly imaginative but also sometimes confusing, but overall a very good time. I was going to Review Amnesty this book but it hasn’t broken out like I hoped it would do, and I would like to see more people reading it, so I am going to say some stuff. This is an extremely imaginative adult fantasy book, despite three of the main characters being children, set in an alternate New Orleans that is just called Nola. In this Nola, magic is commonplace, […]

Thank you livresquejess!

Livresquejess made my night with an email gifting me with three ebooks. I know, I am so basic, I really only read on my tablet these days. I am so excited, just look at these beauties: I have been drooling over The Ballad of Perilous Graves by Alex Jennings since some time late last year when I saw a blurb about it on Twitter (RIP BookTwitter). Last year I saw a review of Half a Soul from KJ Charles and have been wanting it since, […]

Silver on the Tree cover by Susan Cooper

The end of the Sequence

December 31, 2016 by Loopyker Leave a Comment

Silver on the Tree is the final book in The Dark is Rising Sequence. Here, all the important characters from the Light and the Dark come together for the final battle. I’m not sure if it was because both times I listened to this, it was too late to give it my best attention, or if it was the story itself, but this was my least favourite of the series. Alex Jennings returns as narrator, along with the other characters adding a sense of unity […]

Greenwitch cover by Susan Cooper

Jane gets to do something

December 31, 2016 by Loopyker 3 Comments

It will be a surprise to nobody that I came up short of my book review goal again. At least this year I have a good excuse. I jumped through a lot of immigration hoops and moved a big truck full of stuff from Canada to the US, all while planning a wedding. It went more or less as planned, but of course everything took more time and work than anticipated. Fortunately, I have a great husband and in-laws to help make the transition to […]

The Dark is Rising audiobook cover by Susan Cooper

Definitely fantasy genre now

January 4, 2016 by Loopyker 5 Comments

When The Dark is Rising started I was very confused. It was supposed to be the second book in a series, right? But, it starts with completely different characters and in a different village than Over Sea, Under Stone. Only as time goes on, do we see the connection. Will Stanton is the seventh son of a seventh son and just about to turn 11 years old. Up until that point, he is a normal kid who has no idea there is anything special about […]
