An interesting premise, a generic execution.

March 13, 2018 by narfna 2 Comments

I  was underwhelmed by this book. It was an easy read, and it was entertaining, but a lot of the time it felt forced (especially at the beginning), and I thought it was a little too long. I’m glad I read it, but I probably won’t be reading it again, and unless the premise is too good to resist, I probably won’t be reading any future books from this author. So Alex, Approximately is basically a retelling of The Shop Around the Corner/You’ve Got Mail […]

90% of this book was amazing. The other 10% was not.

I loved a lot of this book. It was a cute rom-com story based on the fabulous The Shop Around the Corner (which is also the basis for the very good, You’ve Got Mail). Strangers who start up an anonymous pen pal relationship and fall for each other suddenly meet in real life, where things aren’t as perfect. Here, we have Bailey Rydell, moving across the country to live with her dad for her senior year of high school. Her parents are divorced, and she […]

Old movies and Settlers of Catan

January 2, 2018 by yesknopemaybe 11 Comments

My CBR holiday gift exchange package arrived at just the right time when Alex, Approximately was exactly what I was in the mood to read. A young adult romance with emotions running high, life lessons, and swoony romance was just the thing to get me out of my post-Christmas funk. Essentially, this book is a modern, young adult take on The Shop Around the Corner story, but different enough that it doesn’t feel like a perfect retelling. There were little nods to its origin, but […]

You’ve Got DMs

June 26, 2017 by Caitlin_D 2 Comments

Someone, who I am too lazy to go back and give credit to- sorry, wrote a review about Alex, Approximately and compared it to You Got Mail which instantly attracted my Meg Ryan/ Tom Hanks loving self. This is an adorable YA that is too quirky to be real life but not quite as ridiculous as some of the other books I’ve read recently from the same genre. Bailey has been chatting with a boy, who goes by Alex online, in a film lovers forum. “Alex” keeps asking Bailey […]

A YA retelling of You’ve Got Mail that’s much better than the film, in my opinion

May 17, 2017 by Malin 12 Comments

4.5 stars Bailey “Mink” Rydell and “Alex” have been chatting on a movie message board for months and both absolutely love classic movies. They have hit it off to the point where “Alex” invites “Mink” to his hometown to come see North by Northwest at an outdoor screening on the beach at the annual film festival being arranged in Coronado Cove. Bailey’s parents got divorced a few years back, and now that Bailey’s mother seems to be divorcing her new husband as well, Bailey has chosen […]
