“Where did I go wrong in life?” Everywhere, Chelsea. Everywhere.

November 7, 2018 by crystalclear 3 Comments

Right off the bat, I don’t like this. I wouldn’t have chosen it but for the fact it was the only book I could get other than Wicked, and I read that a while ago.  And we start with a seven-year-old busting into her parents bedroom to photograph them having sex, based off a bet by her older sister?  A seven-year-old who practices swearing and is proud of the fact. Nope. I don’t know how much of this is based on truth and how much […]

My Six Hours Back

October 26, 2018 by octothorp Leave a Comment

This is my Alabama Pink Bingo Square, chosen for being the cheapest book not about politics on the list.  If I could get away with a musical review it would be the first three bars of “nobody but me” by the human beanz (a band name almost as stupid and ugly as this book) looped for ten straight minutes, just a cavalcade of NO. This book is so reductive I think it gives me negative credit for my underrepresented square.  Handler is the worst kind […]

CBR10 Bingo: Alabama Pink and a third Bingo

October 18, 2018 by Caitlin_D 5 Comments

Lollygagger recently reviewed a different book, Wicked, for the same Bingo Square- Alabama Pink- and came away with the realization that they would probably not have belonged in the same book club. I agree; Enchantment was the only book that interested me from the list of books Alabama Pink was able to read and review before her untimely death (I have yet to muster the motivation for our upcoming Book Club selection) and it was severely disappointing. I do wonder though, is it possible to glean a complete […]

But what of Barry the swim instructor? Does he get a happy ending?

A few years ago (I don’t know…maybe 2007?), back when I was addicted to watching Craig Ferguson’s Late Night show, he had an interesting episode in which he sat and talked to his friend Stephen Fry. No monologue, no questions on cards, no skits, no dancing horse. Just a conversation between old friends. It was fascinating. They talked about all sorts of stuff, but what I remember most was their discussion about writing fiction. Fry had several books, their good friend Hugh Laurie had just […]
