“His big, obnoxious Scorpio energy is invading your cozy Cancer safe space!”

Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas

December 20, 2021 by narfna 4 Comments

I saved this for Halloween* and I’m so glad I did. It was so atmospheric and spooky and fun, with great worldbuilding and great characters. The only reason it’s not getting five stars is that I was straight up able to predict everything that happened in the plot, because the author telegraphed it all pretty hard. It didn’t really affect my enjoyment that much, because the fun here was the world and the characters, but I of all people should just not be able to […]

CBR Bingo: They/She/He (author and one of the main characters are trans) A book like this makes me thankful for CBR because I get to talk about something that made me so happy. Cemetery Boys is a delight. Yadriel is a teenager in a family of brujx. They want him to follow in their footsteps, but the problem is they’re having some trouble accepting that Yadriel is a boy who wants to become a brujo (rather than a girl who should become a bruja). Determined to prove […]

If I didn’t already have one DNF on my BINGO sheet, I would have quit this one

Lost in the Never Woods by Aiden Thomas

BINGO – They, She, He (the author is trans) I read Aiden Thomas’ other novel Cemetery Boys earlier this year, and I cannot imagine that it will be knocked out of my top 5 favorite novels that I read in 2021. My expectations were very high going in to Lost in the Never Woods, and unfortunately, those expectations were not met. Lost in the Never Woods is a reimaging of the Peter Pan story set in modern times. Peter Pan is real much to the consternation of […]

Thank you for the rec, Mobius_Walker! My thought while reading this was omg this would make an AMAZING Pixar movie. And then I was like, too bad we already have Coco. And then I was like HOLD UP, WAIT A SECOND, THAT’S SOME INGRAINED THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE-ISM SPEAKING. I stand by my original thought. This movie would make for an INCREDIBLE animated movie, specifically, because when you’re in the realm of animation you can really imbue a world with realism while not being […]

Holy crap. Stop reading this review and just go read this book instead. Trust me. Okay, you’re still here. Fine. Yadriel wants to prove himself to his family. Prove himself as a brujo, as a capable addition to the family business, and, most importantly, as a man. Yadriel is a young, high school aged trans boy in a family of brujxs. The men are all brujos who help spirits cross over to the afterlife, and the women are brujas who heal those still living. Yadriel is […]
