Dreamy Murder on the Orient Express

October 26, 2017 by cheerbrarian 3 Comments

A friend of mine and I were discussing spooky books, something fitting for October and the season of Halloween. We both have read a preponderance of Stephen King, and she came up with this book as something on her “to read” list that could fit the bill.  I read plenty of Agatha Christie back in the day, though only Miss Marple, so Hercule Poirot was a new venture for me. It is worth noting that I went the audio route for this book, which was […]

Miss Marple is in this one from the beginning!

September 12, 2017 by narfna Leave a Comment

I think I’ve come to the conclusion that I prefer Poirot books to Marple ones, but this one started off really well! One of the reasons I usually like Poirot better is that he’s usually more involved in the narrative. Miss Marple usually sidles in at the last moment and mostly does her work off page. But here, she was present from page one. Unfortunately, I just lost my motivation about halfway through as the mystery itself didn’t really hold my attention. Miss Marple’s childhood […]

I literally just said mysteries are silly

August 20, 2017 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

And this mystery is a little silly. It holds up, but it can actually be kind of taxing to read because he prose is so thin and flimsy at times that there’s so little to hold onto. But I was reading this (for the first time, even though I’ve seen the 1974 film and read several of her others) because I was interested in the possibility of teaching this book with a group of special ed 12th graders this year. The class is technically British […]

I Missed Marple

August 14, 2017 by Rachie3879 Leave a Comment

I just remembered that I finished another book while I was on vacation. Sadly, the fact that I totally forgot about it probably gives y’all a clear indicator how I’ll review it. Agatha Christie’s The Murder at the Vicarage (the first appearance of Miss Marple) was kind of a bummer and makes me wonder how well I’ll enjoy the other Marple mysteries I bought on my Amazon Agatha Christie binge. Vicarage centers on a small little town in England (name already forgotten), where a middle-aged […]

Everyone’s Favorite Belgian Detective

June 14, 2017 by Rachie3879 2 Comments

Recently Amazon had a huge Agatha Christie sale for Kindle, so naturally I stocked up. I made a feeble attempt in my tween years to get into Christie’s mysteries, but back then I hadn’t quite the love for British culture of the past, mysteries, or old asexual detectives that I do now. I think I tried to read And Then There Were None once, but I skipped to the end after a few chapters just to find the culprit (much to my current embarrassment). Cut […]

‘Sup, Jessica Fletcher?

May 18, 2017 by JCoppercorn Leave a Comment

The book group that I’m in at work picks books that either have already been made into a movie or soon will be made into a movie.  It’s made for an interesting mix.  And like most book clubs, it also means there are titles you’d never pick up on your own. Murder on the Orient Express is one of these.  Mysteries and thrillers are not my genre.  I’m not interested in looking for clues or remembering what someone said that one time that contradicts what they […]
