Speaking of Mustaches …

March 31, 2018 by xoxoxoe Leave a Comment

I have been into thrillers lately … Murder on The Orient Express, by Agatha Christie, 1934 I had to re-read this classic Agatha Christie novel after recently seeing the Kenneth Branagh movie version. I have always been a huge fan of David Suchet and his version of Christie’s most famous detective, Hercule Poirot. I was initially horrified at the promotional photos of Branagh’s take on the inimitable Belgian’s famous ‘stache, but I actually enjoyed his lively take on the character. Maybe some of that enthusiasm […]

You should employ your little grey cells

I generally like Agatha Christie novels. And I generally liked this one. In fact, it’s one of the ones I have liked the most. That said, I never like them that much. So that said…. Agatha Christie novels remind me of a long running tv show that have had multiple different showrunners. Sort of like the Simpsons, where the Conan O’Brien days were great, the Dana Gould days were ok, etc etc. Also, like tv shows, sometimes there’s a more innovative and interesting attempt to tell the […]

What a Suave Cat

January 31, 2018 by Halbs 1 Comment

I have never read a Hercule Poirot book, and I have not seen the movie version of this Agatha Christie classic. Thus, this is an untainted review. Let me go ahead and solve the mystery for you – this is a very fun book. It’s especially fun if you get the audio version narrated by Dan Stevens (Downtown Abbey et al.).  For the other three of you who haven’t read this bottle episode of a mystery – famous Belgian mystery solver Hercule Poirot is on […]

Half-Cannonball? The books I read and didn’t review

December 31, 2017 by Aquillia Leave a Comment

I needed to write one more review to reach my goal of a half-cannonball, so here’s a roundup of the books I read and didn’t review this year. Does this still count? Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas. 3 stars. I enjoyed this one, reading it on a 7 hour plane journey. The love triangle was a bit irritating in that the end took a bit of a cop out so that it could be an element in later books, but overall it was […]

Sure, let’s add murder to flying in an airplane and make it even worse.

Not my favorite Christie, but fun all the same. Of note: Since I first added this book to my TBR in 2008 (thanks, Goodreads!), I have developed a rather bad fear of flying, so this book (in which one passenger is murdered by another) was like, one nightmare scenario on top of another for me. Add wasps (FUCKING WASPS USELESS DEVIL BUGS) in to the mix and why don’t you just kill me already. This is a Poirot mystery, and a later one at that. I have tried in […]

Death on a train

November 29, 2017 by Malin 1 Comment

Internationally famous private detective Hercule Poirot is on his way back to England after solving a mystery in Syria. He decides to take the Orient Express for part of his journey, only to discover that despite the train normally being quite empty during the winter season, it’s so fully booked in first class that he has to stay the first night in a second class cabin. Poirot is approached by one of the passengers, a Mr. Edward Ratchett, who claims he has many enemies and […]
