Daring Greatly, or, the TED Talk that is now a whole book

February 7, 2017 by alwaysanswerb 1 Comment

I struggle with how to review and rate books like this. In the first place, I feel like they aren’t for me. I typically don’t pick up “self help” or “personal development” books of my own volition; to wit, this was a monthly book club selection. That’s not to say that I am stubborn, that I refuse to get anything out of them, that I’m dismissive of their messages, or that I think they’re a waste of time — none of those are true. It’s […]

“Well, until He gives His final judgment, here’s some of mine.” You’re welcome!

A good introduction can grab you by the collar and say “sit down, this book is going to need your attention.” I immediately bought into Luvvie Ajayi’s I’m Judging You: The Do Better Manual when I read the first line of the introduction. One day, I was minding everyone’s business, scrolling through my Facebook news feed when I saw a picture of someone’s dead grandma being prepared for burial. Sold! I enjoyed this book tremendously. I think I marked at least 5 passages a chapter that […]

Do you have problems? Any problems? Do you need advice? About anything? Have you ever wished, probably around 2am, that you could sit at a table with a mom (maybe your mom, maybe the imaginary mom you wish you had) who would make you a cup of tea or coffee and sit across from you and call you honeybun and be so nice and believe in you so much but also tell you exactly what you needed to do to get your shit straight? Surely […]

An awesome resource for parents.

Despite the somewhat foreboding title, this is a great reference book for tackling the innumerable ways children are little buttholes without also being a butthole yourself. One thing I liked about this book was that it spends at least as much time addressing ways to prevent things you’ll need to discipline as it does on how to handle the problems. Half of parenting is just mastering scheduling your life around naptime and getting good at redirecting and making smaller humans think things are their […]

It Will Change Your Life!!!

March 27, 2016 by Sophia 3 Comments

I vacillate between a compunction to organize and an amazing ability to be a procrastinating slob. At the moment, I’m leaning more towards the compunction to organize: my condo, my life, my finances, and I thought Marie Kondo’s book might give me some tips. And so I read The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing (2014). Organizing seems pretty straight forward to me, and began reading wondering how Kondo would have enough to fill a book. How many different […]
