True life is often much more interesting than fiction

The Bastard Brigade: The True Story of the Renegade Scientists and Spies Who Sabotaged the Nazi Atomic Bomb by Sam Kean

February 21, 2022 by KimMiE" Leave a Comment

In the author’s note to The Bastard Brigade, Sam Kean responds to the question, why has he never written a book about physics before? His previous books (which are all fabulous and highly recommended by me) focus on genetics, chemistry, neuroscience, and the atmosphere, even though the author studied physics in college. He explains, “What I really love doing is telling stories, and when I’m planning a book, I look for rip-roarin’ stories first and foremost. I want heroes and villains, conflict and drama, plot twists […]

I Should Reread These Modesty Blaise Books in Order

A Taste for Death by Peter O'Donnell

February 13, 2022 by sabian30 Leave a Comment

I enjoy rereading all the Modesty Blaise novels, but two of the characters who fall in love in this book were an old married couple in the last one. While the exploits of Modesty and her partner, Willie Garvin, are exciting, this has one of the best fight scenes in all the Modesty novels. In fact, she has a scary encounter with a swordsman AND Willie meets up with a gorilla-like sadist who had battered him almost to the death during a previous encounter. Stuck […]

Up on the Mountain, There Are No Morals

The Third Pole: Mystery, Obsession, and Death on Mount Everest by Mark Synnott

February 8, 2022 by Pooja Leave a Comment

In search of the body of Sandy Irvine and the solution to the mystery of whether he and George Mallory ever made it to the summit, the author and his team climb Mt Everest during one of the deadliest seasons ever. I am not sure why I am drawn to stories about Mt Everest. Certainly I mean to never climb it, and I can’t quite empathize with those who are drawn to it, even if I can understand it sometimes. And books like this underscore […]

It might be time for a break

Black Clover vols. 26-27 by Yuki Tabata

February 6, 2022 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

So I think I might be getting to a moment when I need to step away from the action-adventure manga. I spent most of volume 26 of Black Clover being annoyed at how cliched everything seemed. Basically the whole storyline for the whole volume was people yelling cliches like “We are absolutely going to win for the sake of our truly kind friend!” and “Unless you take me down, they’ll keep right on coming back! Are you into this now, {character name}?” “You are absolutely….GOING […]

A Flying, Glow-in-the-Dark Dinosaur in the Modern Day

Umboi Island by JJ Dupuis

February 6, 2022 by Pooja Leave a Comment

Laura is the host of Creature X, a cryptozoology show, despite being an avowed skeptic. In search of the Ropen, she and her team go to a remote island in Papua New Guinea, where they become entangled in a mystery when a dead man is found in one of their tents. Though billed a mystery, this is more of a good old-fashioned action-adventure novel, complete with martial arts, gun fights, and a far-off setting. What sets this book above many other old-fashioned action-adventure novel is […]

Saints! Soldiers! Sorcery! Swords! Swooning!

The Curse of Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold

Paladin of Souls by Lois McMaster Bujold

January 31, 2022 by andtheIToldYouSos 7 Comments

It’s time for me to FINNALY go all-in on some good old fashioned FAN TA SY. Normally, these are the sort of books that I pick up in the bookstore, give a “hmm” at the cover, and keep walking. I’ve never been great at immersing myself in fantasy worlds outside of the big-names; I just don’t have a memory for the complex lore and histories of most fantasy epics. When I open up a book and it starts with breakdowns of family names and maps […]
