Zooni is a plucky, friendly pup

Zooni Tales: Keep It Up, Plucky Pup by Vikram Madan

Zooni Tales: A Friend Till the End by Vikram Madan

December 28, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I ended 2023 with two sequels read in the young adult category (a thriller/mystery/romance and a humorous/romance/fantasy graphic novel) and a young early reader that is part of a series but it sounds like you can read in any order. Each one showed a part of my personality.  And my very little kid came out when I read Zooni Tales: Keep It Up, Plucky Pup by Vikram Madan. And while I can take or leave Zooni, they have some interesting elements that could really make […]

Which Witch is the worst Witch?

Courtney Crumrin and the Night Things (Courtney Crumrin, #1) by Ted Naifeh

July 26, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Can you like and dislike a book at the same time? I say yes, as the graphic novel Courtney Crumrin and the Night Things (Courtney Crumrin, #1) by Ted Naifeh is exactly that.  And due to that, I am not really sure I want to explore the rest of the books in the various Courtney Crumrin series. Unless, there is a collection of everything…. Well a girl can dream right? There is really nothing likable about any of the characters, even Courtney who we follow through […]

On your marks, get set, Go have one whacky adventure with our less than heroic heroes

Adventure Zone Volume 3 Petals to the Metal by Clint McElroy

July 30, 2020 by BlackRaven 5 Comments

When I first started my graphic novel journey, I found First Second publishers. Then, in my madness to read all that had been written by authors from this publisher (which by the way I don’t recommend as there are too damn many!) I found The Adventure Zone by The McElroy’s (Clint, Griffin, Travis and Justin) and illustrated by Carey Pietsch. In many ways this third book in the Adventure Zone series (which is called Petals to the Metal if you are curious) is not as […]

Have you heard of this author, Margaret Atwood?

Angel Catbird Volume 1 by Margaret Atwood

January 24, 2020 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

What do you do with a book like Angel Catbird Volume 1? You read it. However, the real question is should you have read it? In other words, a book is meant to be read, but did it have to be this book? I had heard of Margaret Atwood (she wrote a little book called The Handmaid’s Tale) but had not realized that she had partaken of the world of illustrations and graphic novels. I admit I only realized she was the author after I […]
