Wielding Hope Like a Sword

The Immortal City by May Peterson

July 29, 2020 by Emmalita 4 Comments

I think the most important thing for me to say up front is that KJ Charles also liked this book and if you won’t take my word for it, listen to KJ Charles. Please go buy it, or request it from your local library. I received this as an arc from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I’ve thought a lot about how to describe this treasure of a book. I keep coming up with movies for comparison. Imagine if Wim Wenders’ Wings of […]

A Road Trip Romance

Hairpin Curves by Elia Winters

July 27, 2020 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Elia Winters is a new to me author, but yet another of those delightful people I follow on Twitter. I heard good things about Hairpin Curves before seeing it on NetGalley. It was a fun road trip romance read. I received this as an arc from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Megan and Scarlett were friends as teens, but that ended when Scarlett ghosted Megan after they made plans to be college roommates. When another childhood friend invites them to her wedding in Canada, […]

The Care and Feeding of Waspish Widows by Olivia Waite

July 20, 2020 by Emmalita 4 Comments

Last year I loved Olivia Waite’s The Lady’s Guide to Celestial Mechanics. When the sequel, The Care and Feeding of Waspish Widows became available on NetGalley I was so excited. I enjoyed it tremendously. I received this as an advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review.

Sweetest in the Gale by Olivia Dade

July 9, 2020 by Emmalita 1 Comment

Sweetest in the Gale is an anthology of novellas by Olivia Dade, all set in her fictional Marysburg. Each of the stories is lovely. The first and the third ripped my heart out for different reasons. In Teach Me, Dade introduced us to Candy Albright, an English teacher and Force to be Reckoned With. In “Sweetest in the Gale,” fellow Marysburg High English teacher, Griff has noticed Candy, but his grief for the death of his wife has disconnected him from other people. Since that first Marysburg […]

The Legal Affair by Nisha Sharma

July 3, 2020 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Nisha Sharma’s The Legal Affair is so much fun. After reading a series of really fantastic books that dealt a lot with grief, Sharma’s Raj and Ajay were a much needed break. I stayed up until 2 am finishing the book. This is the second book in a trilogy, and you should read the first book, The Takeover Effect, first. I did not and there are things I know I missed as a result. In the aftermath of the thwarted hostile takeover of Bharat, Inc., Rajneet “Raj” […]

Here in the half light of the Ethiopian dawn I felt like I could say the truth

Finding Joy: A Gay Romance by Adriana Herrera

June 22, 2020 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Adriana Herrera gives layers of meaning to her title, Finding Joy. For Desta, the East African capital encompasses some of the happiest and saddest parts of his life–his first home and the place where his father died. When an unavoidable work obligation lands him there for twelve weeks, he may finally have a chance for the closure he so desperately needs. What Desta never expected was to catch a glimpse of his future as he reconnects with the beautiful country and his family’s past. Elias […]
