Into the Woods We Go

(Trust) Falling For You by Charish Reid

January 5, 2021 by Emmalita 10 Comments

I was delighted when Charish Reid offered an advance reader copy of (Trust) Falling for You in exchange for an honest review. I enjoyed her previous books The Write Escape and Hearts on Hold. She writes entertaining and heartfelt romances set in academia and centers them around Black women. In (Trust) Falling for You, the humanities department at a small liberal arts college goes on a week long team building retreat. Yolanda and her nemesis, Samuel, have to bunk together and are matched as team building […]

At some point, every love is a tragedy.

Ever After Always (A Bergman Sister novel) by Chloe Liese

December 22, 2020 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Ever After Always is the third book in Chloe Liese’s Bergman Brothers series. You don’t need to have read the first two books, but they are quite good, so you should read them. I received this as an advance reader copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Aiden and Freya have been married for almost 10 years and are still very much in love. Their marriage is still falling apart. When the book opens, Freya has asked Aiden to leave their home to […]

Exeunt, Pursued by a Werebear

Big Bad Wolf by Suleikha Snyder

December 21, 2020 by Emmalita 5 Comments

At the beginning of this year, I reviewed Suleikha Snyder’s short story anthology, Prem Numbers, and said Snyder wrote “radical hope and face sitting.” I’m a fan of her work. She is not a low angst author. Her lovers are passionate. Her stories have all the angst and agony of love in a world that will punish people for looking the wrong way and loving the wrong way. She carves out pockets of safe space for her characters to love in and it feels like […]

Try for me, Eve. That’s all. Just try.

Act Your Age, Eve Brown by Talia Hibbert

December 2, 2020 by Emmalita 5 Comments

Eve is the youngest and flightiest of the Brown sisters. She didn’t really make much of an impression on me in her sisters’ books other than she was present when they needed her. That’s a really good characteristic, being there when needed. At the beginning of Act Your Age, Eve Brown, Eve is updating her journal explaining why she has shuttered her wedding planning business after one successful (except for one disaster) wedding. She is determined to put the incident behind her and move on to […]

Just Like This by Cole McCade

November 25, 2020 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Cole McCade writes beautifully. It felt at times, while I was reading Just Like This, that McCade was getting the ink for his story right out of my well of feelings. I am allergic to my own feelings and would much rather experience them by proxy through fictional characters. McCade doesn’t let me do that. Just Like This is the second book in the Albin Academy series. Albin Academy is a boarding school mostly for boys rich families find troublesome. The teachers and staff also live […]

There are no guarantees, but you can talk yourself out of trying for a good thing.

Get It Right by Skye Kilaen

October 27, 2020 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

There are plenty of problems to go around. Challenges are abundant, so why not take a chance on love? Ellen “Finn” Finnegan is newly out on parole after serving 5 years of her sentence for felony theft. She’s trying to find a job so that she can pay her parole fees and find housing that isn’t her cousin’s stepsister’s couch. While she was in prison, she worked in the infirmary and fell in love with Vivian Curiel, the prison nurse who treated her like a […]
