A strong finish to a nicely done series.

Wonderstruck by Allie Therin

February 1, 2021 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Wonderstruck is a strong finish for Allie Therin’s historical urban fantasy series, Magic in Manhattan. To recap, Arthur “Ace” Kensie is the younger son of a wealthy and politically powerful New York family. As a lieutenant in the army fighting in WWI, he discovered that magic exists. Though he has no magic, he becomes part of an unofficial group of magic users trying to protect the world from paranormals who want to use magic for evil reasons. Theodore “Rory” Brodigan (not his real name) is […]

This Was Great, Except for that One Thing I Hated

Fierce at Heart by Zoe York

January 29, 2021 by Emmalita 4 Comments

This would be a 4 1/2 – 5 star read if it weren’t for the inclusion of some completely unnecessary trauma. Before I talk about what I hated, I want to talk about what I loved. Fierce at Heart explores a modern marriage of convenience between friends who want to support each other as they take on new, post military, careers. Isla Petersen had been Adam Kincaid’s commanding officer during a difficult tour in Afghanistan. A few years later, Adam is in Toronto about to […]

You don’t have to love people the way you learned to love at first.

Love at First by Kate Clayborn

January 25, 2021 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

There are certain things you can count on in a Kate Clayborn book: her lovers will start off at cross purposes, the rapport and banter will be engaging, the pining and self reflection will plug right into your feelings, and the characters will (mostly) act like adults. Love at First has all of this. It’s a comfortable, enjoyable read. There is no shame in enjoying this book. It lacks the emotional urgency and tension of the Chance of a Lifetime series. I still think about those books. […]

Wild Rain by Beverly Jenkins

January 24, 2021 by Emmalita 2 Comments

I am so glad that Beverly Jenkins is finally getting more of the popular attention that she deserves. Her name has come up a lot as people have talked about what Netflix or Shondaland should adapt next for a series. Jenkins has been writing sine 1994, and calls her writing “edutainment.” While white writers, publishers and readers were debating whether it was possible to give Black characters a happy ending in romance, Beverly Jenkins was writing those stories and showing her work with bibliographies for […]

The Knockout by Sajni Patel

January 14, 2021 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

I feel slightly disadvantaged reviewing Sajni Patel’s, The Knockout – I’m not Indian American, I know nothing about Muay Thai, and I haven’t been a teenager in a long, long time. That said, I enjoyed The Knockout. I’ve had it sitting in my NetGalley queue for months because it was suppose to come out last year, but the pandemic pushed it back. I received this as an advance reader copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Once I started reading I realized that […]

Messy…And Then There’s a Stalker

Forgiven by Garrett Leigh

January 8, 2021 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Forgiven is the first book I’ve read by Garrett Leigh, and it wasn’t an entirely successful introduction, but it didn’t put me off the author either. I received an advance reader copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Mia and Luke had an intense on/off relationship as teens that ended abruptly when Luke joined the navy without telling her he was leaving. Mia left their hometown a few years later, moved to Paris, got married, and opened a florist shop with her husband. […]
