Welcome to the Jackie Lau Experience

The Professor Next Door by Jackie Lau

May 14, 2021 by Emmalita 3 Comments

At 2:15 this afternoon I posted in a discord chat: “I was surprised to get an arc of Jackie Lau’s newest, The Professor Next Door, this morning and now 3 1/2 hours later I have finished it, have a sore neck from reading without moving, and I wish I could gorge on cheese. I really liked the book.” The response was: “Welcome to the Jackie Lau experience.” Accurate. The Jackie Lau experience is a reliably enjoyable read, with excellent food and good sex. Anyway, I’m […]

This is the Menopause Book I Will Recommend to Every Body

What Fresh Hell is This? by Heather Corinna

May 10, 2021 by Emmalita 2 Comments

The upside of my disappointment about that other menopause book I reviewed was that several people reached out and told me that there was another book about menopause available for request on NetGalley. What Fresh Hell is This? Perimenopause, Menopause, Other Indignities and You is exactly what I was looking for – gender inclusive, pragmatic, compassionate, and truly, deeply feminist. Why do I, a cis woman, care that a book about menopause is gender inclusive? The answer is, as is the answer to many things, […]

Too Close to Past Trauma to be Enjoyable

Rosaline Palmer Takes the Cake by Alexis Hall

May 8, 2021 by Emmalita 6 Comments

Rosaline Palmer Takes the Cake was not the book for me. I have decided to stop torturing myself and given up mid pudding week. I don’t quite know how to review this book. It was an intensely unpleasant experience for me, but different readers will enjoy it. Though it is very well written and has moments of laugh out loud humor, I struggled with Rosaline and her relationship with Alain. First, she tells him a lie that the reader and Rosaline know will be quickly […]

A Layer Cake of a Book

Battle Royal by Lucy Parker

May 7, 2021 by Emmalita 5 Comments

I love this layer  cake of a book. I planned to read my 6 other advance reader copies that will all be published in May before I tackled Battle Royal, but I have very little impulse control and Lucy Parker is my catnip. I read it in one day and then I was going to wait to review it, but here we are. I recommend having access to the confections of your choice (boozy confections would be appropriate, unless they wouldn’t) and a couple of […]

A Soaptastic Ending to a Soaptastic Series

Serving Sin by Angelina M. Lopez

May 6, 2021 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

I have really enjoyed Angelina M. Lopez’s spectacularly soapy Filthy Rich series. The series has the melodrama and glamour of a 1980’s nighttime soap, but with a lot less misogyny. Lopez centers the stories around strong women who fight to be on top in their chosen profession. The stories sprawl across time and continents, but (mostly) stay focused on the romance. Serving Sin tightens up some of the excesses of Hate Crush. One of the joys of a romance series is knowing that interesting side characters are […]

A Promising Debut with Excellent Sex Toy Rep

Happy Endings by Thien-Kim Lam

May 3, 2021 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

It took me a while to get into Happy Endings, but once Trixie and Andre got going, so did my reading. Happy Endings is a second chance romance set in my favorite city, Washington DC. There was a lot I liked in this book, but I have to point out that Thien-Kim Lam does a stellar job with the sex toys. It’s unusual to see a lot of sex toy use outside of erotic romance, and it’s even more unusual to see sex toys used well. […]
