Don’t Let Anyone Dim Your Shine

For Vacation Only by Mila Nicks

May 28, 2021 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

The best things about For Vacation Only, are Blake, Jubilee, their relationship, touring the European stops on the cruise, and the cover. Those are some great best things to have in romance.  There were some other things that were less great, but nothing I really hated. Blake’s wedding day starts with his fiancé running off with another man and leaving him a note on a place card. He is irritated and embarrassed, but not devastated. His friends take him out, get him drunk, and then […]

This would work better without the romance

A Lowcountry Bride by Preslaysa Williams

May 26, 2021 by Emmalita 1 Comment

This romance would have worked better for me if it had not been a romance – not a thing I thought I would ever say. Wedding gown designer Maya Jackson has been struggling to find a place in a big name designer’s company for a while. She wants to incorporate the west African and Filipino design and stitching techniques she learned from her mother into her gowns, but the white woman who owns the company sees no value in them. Early in the book, Maya’s […]

How to Find a Princess by Alyssa Cole

May 24, 2021 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

I enjoyed How to Find a Princess. Alyssa Cole is such a good writer that even the parts I struggled with were really good. In fact, the anxiety and frustration I felt about Bez and Makeda was largely because of how real Cole made them to me. I think some people are going to find How to Find a Princess a challenge to get into, and it definitely benefits from a second read. Once I was comfortable with the story, I could appreciate how Bez […]

This was their time to be really f’ing weird.

Breaking Badger by Shelly Laurenston

May 22, 2021 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Shelly Laurenston’s Honey Badger Chronicles have joined Martha Wells’ the Murderbot Diaries and Becky Chamber’s Wayfarers series as the books I shove in everyone’s faces given the slightest opening. Are they even romances anymore? I don’t know. Who cares? They have transcended genre and reason and exist on their own plane. There are always 30 something characters and 56 plots going on in a Honey Badger book and it feels a bit like the Motown Wall of Sound. Either you can’t take the confusion or […]

An Enjoyably Messy Heist Romance

Between Two Thieves by Sloane Steele

May 18, 2021 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Sloan Steele’s Counterfeit Capers series is fun and messy. I wondered after the first book, It Takes a Thief, if Steele would tighten up the story telling, and she does, a little. Between Two Thieves has the advantage of established characters, but then Steele introduces more characters, including Flynn, a dog, and a very good boy. It works though. The multiple heists, large cast of characters, and intertwined character arcs works. If you are fan of the show Leverage, this is a good series for you. […]

Catch a Falling Duke by Eve Pendle

May 15, 2021 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Eve Pendle starts Catch a Falling Duke off with a bang when Hugh Ravensthorpe, Duke of Cumbria, discovers his grandfather owned slaves in British Guiana (now Guyana) and that is the source of his family’s wealth. In horror, he flees his family estate. Dairy farm owner, Bea Fenton, is on her way to a job fair hoping to find the man her mother wrote to many years ago. They encounter each other at an inn and their one night stand becomes travelling together. She thinks he’s […]
