B*tch is not the New Black.

Nice White Ladies by Jessie Daniels

October 7, 2021 by Emmalita 4 Comments

I remember the moment when I realized that white women, as a whole, are not crusaders for social justice, but enforcers of white supremacy. I had been working towards it for a while. It happened a lot later than I’d like to admit, and the realization took a while to sink in. I’d like to say I’ve given up my illusions about the role of the white woman in the world, but the things we absorb subconsciously as children are the hardest to root out. […]

Someone Else Will Like This Better

Scales and Sensibility by Stephanie Burgis

October 3, 2021 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

This is a book that was not at all for me, but other people will like much more than I did. I wanted to like it. It’s an homage to Jane Austen, but with magic and dragons. The things I didn’t like are mostly your mileage may vary kinds of things. I find stories in which the protagonist tells an easily discovered lie or is engaged in a three racoons in a trench coat kind of disguise very stressful. Elinor Tregarth is living with her aunt, […]

“Mr. Responsibility and Ms. Take Care of Everyone…Wherever might the two of you find common ground?”

Wild at Heart by Zoe York

October 3, 2021 by Emmalita 2 Comments

Zoe York’s Wild at Heart was a balm to read after flailing around in a fantasy novel that should have worked for me, but did not. It was nice to slip into York’s small Canadian town where everyone knowing everything about everyone is a blessing and a curse. For Catie Berton, what people don’t seem to care to know is what bothers her the most. That, and also that Will Kincaid thinks her town improvement ideas are dumb.  Will thinks Catie is bossy, and she […]

The Sweetest Punch to the Face

Love and Other Disasters by Anita Kelly

September 28, 2021 by Emmalita 3 Comments

I loved this book so much. Between the cooking, the yearning, and the characters who have so much going on in their heads, Anita Kelly hit a lot of my happy buttons. Love and Other Disasters will probably be on a lot of best of lists and most anticipated lists next year. So, plan your pre-orders accordingly. London and Dahlia have been selected to be contestants on a tv cooking competition show for home cooks (not professionals). There is a substantial monetary prize, and for each […]

The Dominatrix and The Star

His Leading Lady by Jenny Nordbak

September 27, 2021 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

I enjoyed reading Jenny Nordbak’s His Leading Lady. It was an engrossing read with good characters and an interesting take on the fake dating and sex lessons tropes.  His Leading Lady is Nordbak’s debut romance, but not her first book. She also wrote about her experiences as a professional dominatrix in Los Angeles. She’s drawn on that experience for her fiction debut. Lady Elena is a professional Dominatrix at the top of her field. She has recently experienced more notoriety than she would like when […]

“Love. Family. To be who you are. The things we don’t always get in this life.”

Unwritten Rules by KD Casey

September 18, 2021 by Emmalita 4 Comments

I think I learned more about baseball from this book than I have ever in my life. Given that I have actively avoided absorbing any knowledge about baseball, the true testament to the quality of K.D. Casey’s debut romance, Unwritten Rules, is that I enjoyed learning about baseball. Unwritten Rules is a leisurely paced second chance romance between two professional baseball players. Casey moves between the past and the present, giving the reader the end, the beginning, the middle, and the renewal all from Zach […]
