Say Yes to the Corn Stock

To The Last Bite by Alexis deBoschnek

February 28, 2022 by Emmalita 12 Comments

Judged solely by the recipes, To the Last Bite is almost a 5 star cookbook. It has some great recipes, and beautiful, appetizing photographs. But, it doesn’t quite do what it says it wants to do – teach tips and tricks for reducing food waste. It starts to go there, but then doesn’t really commit. After spending a couple of weeks with it, I wondered if a decision was made to put more of it emphasis on being pretty than useful. But let’s talk about […]

If in his eyes you are not the target, then you can be sure you are the weapon.

The Atlas Six by Olivie Blake

February 24, 2022 by Emmalita 4 Comments

I am giving The Atlas Six 3.5 rounded up to 4 stars, because I struggled with my focus while reading it, but I also really wanted to know what happened. This was one of those books I thought about not finishing, so I read the end to see if I wanted to go there. I did. The ending made the beginning more interesting and made me keep picking up the book when my attention wandered. The problem is, my attention wandered a lot. Every ten […]

A moment of softness between us, two not very outwardly soft people.

Wherever is Your Heart by Anita Kelly

February 20, 2022 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Wherever is Your Heart starts after 5 years of pining. Mal is the bartender that the characters in Sing Anyway and Our Favorite Songs found scary/sexy/intimidating. Mal has steely eyes and keeps herself somewhat apart from the denizens of Moonies. June is a long-haul trucker who is based in Portland and has been stopping in to Moonies when she’s in town for 5 years. At the Pride festival the year before, something was almost said between them, but June got scared and left. June and Mal have […]

A Good Starter Cookbook for Diabetics

Betty Crocker Simply Delicious Diabetes Cookbook by Betty Crocker

February 18, 2022 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

This is not my usual kind of cookbook. A dear friend told me that they needed to make some dietary changes because their blood sugar levels were consistently high, though not yet over the diabetes threshold. They were stressed because they didn’t really know what they needed to do, what to eat, what to not eat, and so on. An hour later I was looking at NetGalley and there was the Betty Crocker Simply Delicious Diabetes Cookbook. I don’t have any expertise in what makes […]

Success, here, is not determined by domination but by connection.

Conversations With People who Hate Me by Dylan Marron

February 12, 2022 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Conversations With People Who Hate Me: 12 Things I Learned from Talking to Internet Strangers is one of those books I’m going to be yelling about for a long time to come. It is thoughtful and thought-provoking. As a liberal leaning very online person, I have been aware of Dylan Marron for several years and have heard his TED Talk about receiving hate online. In his book, he takes us through first how he got online and why he was creating the content he was […]

A Hopeful Romance with Community and So Much Good Food

A Match Made in Lipa by Carla de Guzman

February 8, 2022 by Emmalita 4 Comments

I had to stop reading this a few times to soothe my aching chest. There is an undercurrent of melancholy in Carla de Guzman’s A Match Made in Lipa that gives depth to the sweet and hopeful childhood friends to lovers romance. Kira and Santi played together as children in Lipa until Santi’s grandfather demanded the family move to Manila. Years later, Santi is wandering through Osaka, having just been fired from the family hotel business and cut off from all family money. He runs into […]
