His hand looked like the rest of him, large and stern and competent.

Hotel of Secrets by Diana Biller

February 26, 2023 by Emmalita 12 Comments

I loved Hotel of Secrets and now I want to go read Diana Biller’s backlist. I was anxious going in to this romance because I haven’t enjoyed a straight historical romance in forever, but it quickly won me over. I liked it so much I’ve actually preordered a signed copy from an independent bookstore. Hotel of Secrets is set in Vienna just as 1878 begins. While the jostling among empires (Austro-Hungarian, Russian, Ottoman) and the rise of national identities isn’t a focus, it does creep […]

It’s not a bad decision to be happy.

Something Wild & Wonderful by Anita Kelly

February 19, 2023 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Anita Kelly has very quickly become one of my favorite writers. They are on my very short auto-buy list. If you haven’t picked up Kelly’s Moonlighter’s series, you should do that. They are short, sweet, and very queer. Something Wild & Wonderful is in the world of Love & Other Disasters, London and Delilah even make an appearance, but it is a stand alone in terms of plot. After being disowned by his parents and laid off from his job, Alexei is hiking the Pacific Crest […]

Maybe that’s how you fool other empaths, like, “hey baby, you just be your high-strung self and let me handle all that scary danger,” but respectfully, Agent Dead Man, I’m pretty sure you are the scary danger.

Liar City by Allie Therin

February 17, 2023 by Emmalita 1 Comment

Note: the Harper Collins Publishers Union and the NewsCorp have reached an agreement and the union has accepted the contract! I’ve been waiting to talk about Liar City for weeks!!!!! Allie Therin writes wonderful queer urban fantasy, and I would love for more people to start reading her books. I have enjoyed her historical fantasy series and was intrigued to see what she would do with a contemporary alternate universe. Folks, I loved it. Liar City opens with a mysterious phone call at 4 am […]

This book is begging to be a TV show, or graphic novel

Mr. & Mrs. Witch by Gwenda Bond

February 8, 2023 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Every once in a while, I come across a book that begs, BEGS, to be a tv series, or a graphic novel. Gwenda Bond’s Mr. & Mrs. Witch would translate so well into a visual medium. I keep throwing in graphic novel as an option, because some of the more fantastical elements would need very good special effects. I would love to see Mother Circe’s cabin on chicken legs, the witches flying on brooms, and the familiars shifting forms. The book opens on Savvy and Griffin’s wedding […]

Her grin was tiny but evil. Adorably evil, if that was a thing.

Role Playing by Cathy Yardley

February 7, 2023 by Emmalita 1 Comment

I liked Role Playing so much! The main characters are only a few years younger than I am, and more of this, please! I am very sad to say that this isn’t out until July 1. You should put it on your Summer TBR, because it is excellent. Maggie and Aiden’s relationship is inadvertently driven by two mother/son relationships. Maggie makes an effort to be more social as part of a pact with her son, who is a freshman in college. She is worried that […]

“I said, could I f*ck you, and you said, yes please, and I thought, there’s manners. Proper breeding, that is.”

The Secret Lives of Country Gentlemen by K.J. Charles

February 2, 2023 by Emmalita 5 Comments

Sometimes I’ll get a book that I know I’m going to like a lot and I’m reluctant to read it because then it will have been read. I got my e-arc quite some time ago and was resistant to reading it for weeks. And then I finally opened it yesterday and read with brief breaks for sleep and food. I knew I would love it, I’m so glad I finally read it, and now I’m jealous of everyone who gets to read it for the […]
