Probably a better show than a book (CBR12Bingo: Adaptation)

Diagnosis by Lisa Sanders

July 14, 2020 by octothorp Leave a Comment

This book was the equivalent of a short mystery collection where nearly every story was entitled “The Butler Did It.” I haven’t seen the Netflix series this inspired, but I have to imagine it’s better if only because it would HAVE to flesh out the stories of the patients and doctors contained here – each medical mystery is about two to four pages long, and there’s simply not enough material per story to support a half hour episode. Hell, there’s not even enough time for […]

Sword of Destiny (The Witcher, #0.75) by Andrzej Sapkowski

July 9, 2020 by narfna Leave a Comment

I have really turned around on this series! I feel like I need to re-read the first book now before moving onto the series proper, because I only experienced it in a grudging manner, and didn’t appreciate it for its good qualities. I will also be honest in that it was entirely the Netflix show that did the turning. I enjoyed it so much that it crystallized for me retroactively what people were seeing in the books. This second book in the Witcher series is […]

Death of an Expert Witness by P.D. James

July 6, 2020 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

Death of an Expert Witness feels like a classic P.D. James Dalgliesh novel- a forensic scientist with a lot of enemies is discovered murdered in the lab, and Dalgliesh is called in to find out whodunnit.  The setting for this Dalgliesh outing is a private forensic lab near the small town of Ely, which is 14 miles north of Cambridge.  Ely is part of England’s fenlands, which is a low-lying coastal plain similar to Holland.  James’ ability to tie her mysteries to her setting is […]

It is 1954, and a young man named Atticus is headed home to Chicago. In Chicago he will find his beloved uncle and aunt, who together run The Safe Negro Travel Guide and Travel Agency. His uncle, like himself, is a lover of pulp novels and dime store comics. His aunt travels the country alone, adding stops to the travel guide while looking at the stars. An Indictment of the Court System

Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson

July 1, 2020 by Jen K 1 Comment

Bingo Square: Adaptation (movie) I vaguely remember reading the movie review on Pajiba when this movie came out, and it described it as good but formulaic, so I didn’t go out of my way to watch it (not that I have been watching a lot of dramas to start with).  When it became free to rent, I decided to check it out, and while I can see why from a movie reviewer perspective one might describe it as formulaic, there is a reason for that […]
