So much fun. So fucked up. Can I say that?

The Mad and the Bad by Jean-Patrick Manchette

January 5, 2021 by chatelaine9 3 Comments

First of all I have to cop to cheating on this. Kind of. The beginning of this review is maybe 2 years old, however, I just reread the book! So…recycling and expanding. It’s fine! la la la just never you mind I READ THIS IN ONE SITTING. It’s funny, it’s dark, it’s cartoonish, it’s Tarantinoesque, it’s either brilliant social/political/economic/mental health commentary or the rantings of a crazy person. Or both. I loved it. The friend who gave it to me said, “Yeah, he is pretty […]

If you need me, I’ll be exporting all of my anxiety directly to Murderbot.

Rogue Protocol by Martha Wells

Murderbot, you have done it again! You have ignored the order of my TBR pile, but you have also served as much-needed distraction. I had a VERY important event scheduled for this afternoon, and had made the arrangements for this to happen weeks ago, but as of 9AM today I had yet to hear back from the group running this event. This waiting translated into heart-pumping, sweat-pouring STRESS that has kept my edgy and more-or-less constantly awake since….Friday, maybe? Happy New Year! This event was […]

The Disasters by M.K. England

#CBR12 Bingo: Violet (Obviously also works for Book Club, and will fit into Debut and maybe UnCannon and Friendship, as well)   All Nax Hall has ever dreamed of is going Ellis Station Academy and qualifying as a pilot. Unfortunately, he fails his entrance exam and is sent packing after less than twenty-four hours. Sharing his fate are Rion, Case and Zee, and while they’re all waiting for their one-way shuttle back to Earth, they are witness to a terrorist attack on the space station. The […]

Trying desperately to get enough reviews for my double Cannonball

Burn for Me by Ilona Andrews

White Hot by Ilona Andrews

Wildfire by Ilona Andrews

Diamond Fire by Ilona Andrews

December 27, 2019 by Malin 4 Comments

Sapphire Flames, book 4 in the series (novellas only count as half instalments) and the continuation of the series came out in August (on my birthday – thank you, House Andrews, for your benevolence!). In the months leading up to that release, I wanted to re-read the previous books, so everything was fresh in my mind. The plan was that my husband would read them too (how am I married to a man who just simply refuses to read the same things I like and […]

“As it turned out, a pissed-off drag queen with a grappling hook was a force to be reckoned with.”

Death Prefers Blondes by Caleb Roehrig

March 5, 2019 by Mikki Blu 5 Comments

This book was featured on the GFY website, highly recommended by the Fug Girls, where it was touted as a cross between Alias and RuPaul’s Drag Race.  That comparison alone made me take notice!  As per the blurb:  Teenage socialite Margo Manning leads a dangerous double life. By day, she dodges the paparazzi while soaking up California sunshine. By night, however, she dodges security cameras and armed guards, pulling off high-stakes cat burglaries with a team of flamboyant young men. In and out of disguise, she’s in […]

Too much old, not enough new in the Box

July 23, 2017 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

The Everything Box got a lot of attention when it first came out, but I’ve only just now gotten to it. I don’t quite understand what all the hype was about. Yes this is an entertaining adventure story with amusing characters, but I didn’t love it. I enjoyed it, but it just wasn’t as awesome as I was hoping. 3.5 stars. First, it’s so strongly reminiscent of Good Omens (by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman) in terms of characters and plot that it comes off […]
