I finally read Fourth Wing (Bingo blackout, just before the deadline!)

Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros

November 8, 2024 by Malin 1 Comment

3.5 stars CBR16 Bingo: Smash (romantasy – I want it on record that I hate this term, by the way) Since this has been a huge success and had lots of attention on the TikToks and the like, I’m not even sure if I need to give much of a plot summary, but here goes: All her life, Violet Sorrengail has wanted to become a Scribe, like her father. However, her mother, a commanding general of the army of Navarre (the fictional country this is […]

The Cheese don’t stink

Lisa Cheese and Ghost Guitar (Book 1): Attack of the Snack by Kevin Alvir

October 15, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Lisa Cheese and Ghost Guitar (Book 1): Attack of the Snack by Kevin Alvir is a lot of things. I was about half way through when I realized it probably was mostly a commentary on capitalism, mom & pop stores vs. the big man and the greed of “bigger and better” and addiction to that (via fast food joints).  It is a story of love and friendship and demon possession. If a humanoid-unicorn had a superhero origin story this would be it. There was more […]

Race against the tide

Crystal Cave (Sueño Bay Adventures, Volume 5) by Nancy Deas and Mike Deas

October 11, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

For the most part, you can read Crystal Cave (Sueño Bay Adventures, Volume 5) by Nancy Deas and Mike Deas separately from the others in the series. However, I am assuming it probably is best to start with book one, Shadow Island (I wasn’t sure who/what the pet/friend of our main character was). The story itself is not necessarily a new one, but it is told in a fun way that keeps you reading. Good illustrations and a nice fantasy/mystery/realistic story. The idea is that […]

Dirge has one unique style that is going to be a huge hit with the right adult audience. I am sooooooooo not that audience

I Can Count To Ten by Roman Dirge

October 11, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Roman Dirge is one SICK dude! Therefore they have a huge hit on their hands with I Can Count To Ten as there are a lot of  other disturbed individuals out there. I am glad that he put the disclaimer in I Can Count To Ten (and I read it) as you know (as Dirge mentions) that people will buy this book thinking it is a cute, child-friendly book about learning to count. (However, it probably should be on the cover, not a page or […]

Too much of a good thing and traveling through time can upset more than your tummy

Olivia Wolf and a Million Olivias by José Fragoso

Olivia Wolf and the Trip Through Time by José Fragoso

September 30, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

A while back I read the first book in the Olivia Wolf series, Olivia Wolf and the Moldy Sandwich. I don’t remember the story itself, but I remember liking it. It was a fun, cute story about monsters and humans living harmoniously together. There was a mystery and they solved it. I then read book two, Olivia Wolf and the Night of the Giant Monsters, and the same thing was on those pages: a cute, fun story with a mystery to solve. Then recently I […]

The Brothers 3 and their Dad and this person name Carey do a really cool series

The Adventure Zone Vol. 4: The Crystal Kingdom by Clint McElroy, Carey Pietsch (Artist), Griffin McElroy, Travis McElroy, Justin McElroy

The Adventure Zone, Vol. 5: The Eleventh Hour by Clint McElroy, Carey Pietsch (Artist), Griffin McElroy, Travis McElroy, Justin McElroy

September 13, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

This probably goes without saying, but I will say it, “Read volumes one to three first.”  So, why am I writing this review for volumes four and five? To let you know that the series gets better as it goes along. Now, things might be a bit slow for the old school reader of D&D like graphic novels (especially at first), but the humor and accessibility for the newbie or someone not fully familiar with that format can get into it. I once gave a […]
