Whole new meaning to Under the Sea

Mera: Tidebreaker by Danielle Paige

May 8, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I have not decided why the cover of Mera: Tidebreaker turned me off to the book. In fact, the whole story turned me off. I have never been an Aquaman fan, so maybe that was why. Maybe I was afraid that Danielle Paige would make her too “Girl Power-She-Woman-Man-Hater.” Maybe I was just really envious of her red hair. Regardless of my misgivings, when I finally found a copy of this graphic novel, I was willing to give it a shot. And I am glad […]

If you step on this Lego you’ll only slip

Mystery of the Masks (Lego Ninjago) by Kate Howard

March 26, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Are you social distancing? In the house for way to long with your kiddos? Are they are Lego Ninjago fan? Then try this book (or series) on.   Mystery of the Masks (Lego Ninjago) by Kate Howard is a book if you know who these characters are. This book starts in the “middle” of the characters story. Their characteristics and what these people (Lego) can do are already in place. This is #17 in the series of books. I did not realize this when I […]

Try not to be too crabby that this does not come out until August

Crabapple Trouble by Kaeti VanDorn

February 25, 2020 by BlackRaven 4 Comments

Due to the cover of Crabapple Trouble I was worried this might be some really bad acid trip. That fear continued when, I noticed heads did not always meet body in the illustrations and later, heads literally roll away after “popping off” of their bodies. I am assuming kids will be okay with Kaeti VanDorn’s realistic-abstract-unique characters which are sentient fruits and vegetables. But I can see some adults being unnerved by them. After all, the characters are Farmers which technically farm themselves (the lemon […]

When the city’s fate rests in the hands of enemies: Parts 2 & 3

The Nameless City V02 The Stone Heart by Faith Erin Hicks

The Nameless City V03 The Divided Earth by Faith Erin Hicks

February 24, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Nameless City is a trilogy that (if you are like me) should probably be read back-to-back. I was lucky and able to read all three with little break between one and two (and two and three the same day). Yet, a few things I had to backtrack and try to remember, “Okay who are you again?” or “What did you do?” However, the reader aged 10 to 14 should have no difficultly remembering everything. And thankfully, all three are out so regardless they can […]

When the city’s fate rests in the hands of enemies

The Nameless City (Book One) by Faith Erin Hicks

February 19, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I am going to save my dislikes of this book for after I finish the series; as there are a few plot points/plot holes I think could be explained when the story is completed. Therefore, I am going to say that The Nameless City (Book One) is an interesting start to The Nameless City series. It is a fantasy realistically presented as (so far) there are no magics, aliens or other fantastical images or people. While the city itself is a diverse group of people, […]

Swashbuckling fantasy

Lily the Thief by Janne Kukkonen

January 20, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I once was talking to a coworker about a book I read and liked but the way I described it was that I had never loved and hated a book so much in my life. It was amazing, but I was mentally-physically ill while reading as the emotions were so great. It was not an easy read, to say the least. And while I cannot say I loved and hated Lily the Thief that extremely, it did create an experience that I felt strongly. I […]
