I need a cat-chy title so Cat-ch!

A Cat Story by Ursula Murray Husted

September 30, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

While I immensely enjoyed this graphic novel of Ursula Murray Husted, there is a scene in A Cat Story that is reminiscent of the Lotus Eaters (I believe it is called that and believe it is from the Odyssey) or a “Hell scene” or a “bad trip.” This, to say the least, was a bit disturbing for me. Up to this point, the story had been sweet (a cat is trying to find a special location/home where they (cats) will not be cold or hungry, […]

Two for the paw of one

Super Turbo Saves the Day by Lee Kirby

Pup Detectives V01 The First Case by Feliz Gumpaw

September 25, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

My recent vacation time was meant to be reading time. But I had a few adventures and just a lot of “Boy, am I too tired to read anything too serious; but OH LOOK! Two short, cute looking young, graphic novels!” The first read was Super Turbo Saves the Day by Lee Kirby, George O’Connor and Stan Kirby. It is also the first in the Super Turbo series. This familiar story of  classroom pets who take it upon themselves to protect their classrooms when students […]

Brightly Woven: The Graphic Novel by Alexandra Bracken

June 4, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Brightly Woven: The Graphic Novel is a refreshingly simple fantasy yet is not superficial. You know the characters and themes because you have read other stories with handsome, mysterious wizards and lovely, plucky heroines. The villains are bad (they even have the scar to prove it). There is magic, secrets and even a possible romance. There is intrigue and a war to be stopped. When Sydelle Mirabil meets Waylon North, she realizes he is not an ordinary wizard. And soon, she learns she is not […]

She puts the Wonder in Woman

Wonder Woman: Tempest Tossed by Laurie Halse Anderson

May 15, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I like superheroes. Which some find funny as I am a villain girl. How I love me a good, ol’ baddie! However, when you have an interesting or relatable hero, I tend to find them more to my tastes (but it does not hurt that Adam West was funny and I would not mind saluting Captain American). Okay, I mixed my DC and Marvel there, but this book, Wonder Woman: Tempest Tossed, is a new DC adaptation due in June of this year. Laurie Halse […]

We need some space….and humans to do our dirty work.

Last Pick V01 Last Pick by Jason Walz

Last Pick: V02 Born to Run by Jason Walz

May 11, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

You know this story. We have read it a hundred times: Aliens take over Earth, steal people for their own needs and eventually, humans decide to fight back. A few will die on both sides, but even more become heroes.  And there is nothing wrong with that. Especially since Last Pick and Last Pick: Born to Run by Jason Walz have a few new pieces of information. This is a science fiction and realism mixed together creation. There is the classic graphic novel format and […]

The shortest (or almost shortest) title anyone will review

Ye by Guilherme Petreca

May 8, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Ye by Guilherme Petreca is one of those metaphor books where you sometimes can miss the metaphor if you are looking too closely at the literal aspect of things. It is also something you might read too much into if you are not careful. Therefore, this is what I like to call “An Experience Book.” You must read it to find what speaks to you. Is it a metaphor for fear, anger, depression? Is it about growing, living, life? Or is it about a kid […]
