The Golden Eyed girl

Island Book (Island Book #1) by Evan Dahm

The Infinite Land (Island Book #2)  by Evan Dahm

October 4, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

A little while ago  I reviewed book three of Island Book not realizing I had read book three until I was into it a bit. Of course, I said, well since there are holes in the plot I need to find one and two. And I did. And some things were cleared up and other things added. The big thing I noticed was that there is a lot of foreshadowing that you might not pick up if you are reading in order. The thing I […]

Second time is a charm

Nimona by N.D Stevenson

August 15, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I first read Nimona by N.D Stevenson in 2019 (but my version had their dead name). My main takeaway from this recent read was how the theme itself has not changed, but our perceptions of it might have. I know mine did. I didn’t even know what a dead name was four years ago. It would never have occurred to me that it is harmful to misgender or dead-name someone. In those few years, a lot has happened, and I hope I have grown past […]

Yo Ho Ho and Treasure

Danger in the Deep Sea (2) (OceanX Adventures) by Kate B. Jerome

July 31, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Kate B. Jerome has a series dealing with the OceanX expeditions, and book two is Danger in the Deep Sea (2) (OceanX Adventures). As an 8 to (young-medium) 12-year-old I would have devoured this book/series. I did not realize this was book two when I “picked up” the online reader copy. And while it can be a stand-alone read, it probably would have helped to read book one first. The adventures of the story are unbelievable, yet, probably plausible. Our main character is a treasure […]

Save the world and work the family food truck

Mabuhay! A Graphic Novel by Zachary Sterling

July 11, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

We know the surface story, but there are several fun twists and turns in Mabuhay! A Graphic Novel.  What I mean is, we know sibling issues, how as kids our parents are always embarrassing us, that we are trying to make friends while dealing with bullies and trying to fit in. And one will not be able to do that when your parents own a food truck called The Beautiful Pig and you are in the smelly pig mascot costume. Or if  your kid sister is just […]

You can call her a hero

Adora and the Distance by Marc Bernardin

June 12, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I have been debating on reading Adora and the Distance for sometime now. The cover made it look like it was a typical “Girl of color is our hero” and “Down with the patriarchy and non-representation!” novel. Well, this book by Marc Bernardin is proof one should not judge a book by its cover. Oh, yes, it is a young nine-year-old girl of color who is a hero, off on adventures, but if you look closer, it is more than that.  At first, I was […]

It’s time for the girls to get the job done

Aru Shah and the End of Time: the Graphic Novel by Roshani Chokshi

June 7, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Step aside all you Pandavas (heroes), Aru (and Mini) are in town! Aru Shah and the End of Time: the Graphic Novel is a heavy feminist take on the hero/heroine story arc. Two Indian American girls (who are two of the reincarnated Pandava brothers who battled in a civil war with their 1000 cousins), must battle mythical beings, with help from the Gods that claim them. With quirky humor mixed in, this heavy on text graphic novel has some fun illustrations, interesting adventures and a […]
