Drag Queens and Dinosaurs have bellies

B Is for Bellies by Rennie Dyball

Parker’s Place by Russ Willms

Big Wig by Jonathan Hillman

July 11, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I was going to use B Is for Bellies by Rennie Dyball as my Bingo Bodies but found another one instead. Therefore, I just decided to add this to a review of two other books about being yourself. Starting with a bunch of bellies (well, we have A first as B is for Bellies is an alphabet book)  we have a self explanatory picture book. This book is about big bellies, small bellies, black and brown, and white and purple bellies (okay maybe not purple). […]

Two books, one review and lots of love

Extraordinary Albert by Bonnie Grubman

The Boy in the Orange Cape by Adam Ciccio

March 12, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Both stories of this review are books that are about being different and acceptance. The execution and the endings are different, but their results are the same: both characters who are different are accepted, one by his peers and the other of himself. The Boy in the Orange Cape had intrigued me because I am thinking: Why is he wearing the cape? I looked at the cover, read the description and when the opportunity can to get a copy, I jumped on it. I will […]

Resistance is futile

July 3, 2017 by The Book Omnivore Leave a Comment

Oh dear. What did I just read? Acceptance is the third and final part of the Southern Reach trilogy by Jeff VanderMeer. So, if you haven’t read the first and second part, and you’re planning on reading them despite my ”proceed with caution” reviews, stop reading now. SPOILERS AHOY Acceptance deals with the events that take place right after Control and Ghost Bird jump into the tidal pool, but also with the past (the light keeper’s life as well as the months preceding the director’s […]

Acceptance by Jeff VanderMeer; FSG Originals (2014)

Starting off the New Year…

January 21, 2016 by KM Bezner 4 Comments

Yes, I am aware that this is the last book in VanderMeer’s Southern Reach trilogy. And yes, I do see the irony in the fact that my first review of the year is of the final book of a series. That being said, I’m gonna cheat a little bit and use this review as an excuse to discuss all three books, and remember in future years not to start a series at the end of the year. Over the past couple months I’ve made a […]

The End is the Beginning

January 5, 2016 by expandingbookshelf Leave a Comment

Whoa boy. I’ve read all three books of Jeff VanderMeer’s Southern Reach trilogy, and I still don’t know how to describe them. I heard about them after they won some fantasy award, but they’re not quite fantasy. They’re in part sci-fi, dystopian and mystery, but those labels don’t really mean much to the book. The people tasked with solving the puzzle of the mysterious Area X know that they’re never going actually solve the mystery. They’re just hacking away at what they can. And we […]

Where lies the strangling fruit that came from the hand of the sinner I shall bring forth the seeds of the dead…

July 28, 2015 by TylerDFC 3 Comments

Southern Reach Trilogy is a smart and scary science fiction story that offers literate thrills for those willing to stick through it. The trilogy is LOST crossed with an apocalyptic Lovecraft scenario. It’s an ecological disaster story at heart but spends considerable amount of time examining the people and things that are exposed to the mysterious Area X and detailing the effects it has on them. Note: I read the 3 volumes that make up the Southern Reach trilogy separately. The Amazon link is for […]
