A tale of two orphans

April 23, 2018 by Mikki Blu 2 Comments

The Lonely Hearts Hotel is a love story with the power of legend. An unparalleled tale of charismatic pianos, invisible dance partners, radicalized chorus girls, drug-addicted musicians, brooding clowns, and an underworld whose economy hinges on the price of a kiss. In a landscape like this, it takes great creative gifts to thwart one’s origins. It might also take true love. This is the blurb about this book, which led me to believe it would be a kind of off beat tale of eccentric circus type […]

Mediocre New Adult all hopped up on a Very Special message.

I’ll get this out of the way — I didn’t like this book very much. Explaining why will lead me on several tangents, so before you continue, understand that this is part review and part aimless wandering about random talking points. If you want a straightforward take on this book you’ll have to go elsewhere. I’ll be spoiling major plot points, so be forewarned of that as well. CW: ABUSE I became aware of It Ends with Us when it won the Goodreads Choice 2016 […]

My heart beat hard and furious against my ribs like a fist wanting to hurt

Amazon released this Kindle Single as a teaser for a forthcoming book from Joyce Carol Oates. I generally love Oates. She makes me uncomfortable in all the right ways, and reminds readers regularly that all manner of person can be a victim and all manner of person can be a predator. This is a fascinating and quick read, almost dream-like in some ways because it is first-person narrative in the head of a young man actively dissociating as a protective mechanism for seemingly numerous traumas. […]

Drumroll…………. It makes its second appearance in my Cannonball Read in as many years. (Here is my review from last year.) But dangit, it’s just absolutely outstanding all over again. Honestly, I might be at a loss for words now, and I think that’s because Stephen King took all of them. All the words. It is so long. But it reads so fast! I can’t put it down, and I don’t want to put it down! It’s just one of those books. So, the timing […]

Everything she has is secondhand.

I succumbed and read The Girl on the Train! Why the hell didn’t any of you warn me that it would be impossible not to take it way too personally? J’accuse! (Just kidding; I like to stay unspoiled and wouldn’t have listened to you anyway.) What’s funny is that I listen to the “My Favorite Murder” podcast, and I’ve listened to their promo for the movie a whole bunch of times, in which the script goes “devasted by her recent divorce…” blah blah blah blah. […]

She had already learned the dangers of sincerity.

Faithful followers of my must-read, brilliantly executed, and always punctual reviews will know that I only recently discovered Roxane Gay last year, with Bad Feminist. And you will know that based on reading only that collection of essays, I will follow her to the ends of the earth, shout her name from the rooftops, aspire to be as articulate, hilarious, and honest as she, and never be dissuaded from my undying love for her. Difficult Women is haunting and beautiful. I was nervous. My expectations […]
