A *shrug* and a *yawn*

February 23, 2018 by Beth Ellen 1 Comment

So I first read A Wrinkle in Time around 20 years ago. That’s my best guess. I remembered nothing about it, except that I did not like it at all, on a fairly strong level. So when I heard they were making a new movie I shrugged, but then it was directed by Ava DuVernay (yes), staring a diverse cast (YES), and then the trailer dropped. All in. Alllllll in. And it’s our bookclub book today! Reread commencing. I’m going to skip the plot synopsis […]

“We do not know what things look like. We know what things are like. It must be a very limiting thing, this seeing.”

I still love this. The last time I read A Wrinkle in Time was ten years ago. I hadn’t read the book in years before that, and barely remembered it, except for a few images that had burned into my subconscious (the man with the red eyes, for example; the Murry’s vegetable garden and their laboratory; Charles Wallace; and I remembered that I thought it was terrifying). It’s basically impossible for me to read or review it now without my childhood impressions coloring it. Because […]

“A straight line is not the shortest distance between two points.”

I somehow managed to make it 30 years without reading A Wrinkle in Time. I was certain I had read it before, how could I not have, but the story didn’t seem familiar while I was reading. However, it did make me nostalgic to reread Phantom Tollbooth now. A brief summary (since everyone will be writing about this book in the upcoming two weeks): Meg Murry, her baby brother Charles Wallace, and their neighbor Calvin are sent on a journey through time and space by […]

Discussion Topics: A Wrinkle in Time

With Ava DuVernay’s movie adaptation coming out in a month, we’re tying our first #CannonBookClub of 2018 with this 1962 science fiction fantasy classic. A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle won the Newbery Medal and was runner-up for the Hans Christian Andersen Award among others. Here’s some food for thought as we get ready to discuss on February 23 and 24. Make sure to tag #CannonBookClub if you’re posting about the book, and please share the cover of your version!

We Were the One Thing in the Universe God Didn’t Have His Eyes On

October 22, 2017 by Ellesfena 4 Comments

I had no idea until about 2 minutes ago that “it was a dark and stormy night” is considered a cliched, unoriginal way of starting a story. I associate it so closely with A Wrinkle in Time–one of the most magical books from my childhood–that to me it’s the perfect way to start a book, and it’s too bad there aren’t more that start this way. I can’t read A Wrinkle in Time without thinking back to my own childhood. I don’t remember for sure, […]

Spirited away

February 16, 2017 by The Book Omnivore 4 Comments

I obviously must have spent all of my childhood under a rock, because I somehow missed Madeleine L’Engle’s classic ”A wrinkle in time”. One of my favourite activities as a child was to go to our nearby library, pick a book from the shelves and make myself comfortable in their reading room, which was very cozy, all covered in cushions. Still, this book managed to fly under my radar. It was only thanks to the several Cannonballers who have reviewed it over the years that […]
