The End is Never the End

The End by Lemony Snicket

January 26, 2021 by esmemoria Leave a Comment

The final, and 13th, book in A Series of Unfortunate Events is fittingly titled The End. It has taken me about a month to finish the entire series and I confess by this book some of the story’s tics had worn me down a bit. I was no longer entertained by the constant definitions of words and phrases for humorous effect. The Baudelaire orphans, I felt, had become predictable and even a little boring. I enjoyed the villain Count Olaf more than the main characters. […]

A YA Book that Quotes Richard Wright

The Penultimate Peril by Lemony Snicket

January 24, 2021 by esmemoria Leave a Comment

Who knows when some slight shock, disturbing the delicate balance between social order and thirsty aspiration, shall send the sky-scrapers in our cities toppling? — Richard Wright, Native Son The Penultimate Peril is the 12th book–the penultimate book–of A Series of Unfortunate Events. For my reviews of the 10th and 11th books, go here and here. The travails of the Baudelaire orphans continue in The Penultimate Peril, and if anything, get darker. The book takes place in the Hotel Denouement, where the children take on […]

The Grim Grotto by Lemony Snicket

January 17, 2021 by esmemoria Leave a Comment

The Baudelaires drifted along in cold, dark silence, feeling afraid and confused and strangely lonely. – The Grim Grotto After reading Book 11 The Grim Grotto in A Series of Unfortunate Events, a heretofore unknown thalassophobia has seized me. Maybe that’s why this book in the series seemed the darkest thus far. For background on the series, see my review here. Calling this the grimmest book of the series is saying something. The Baudelaire orphans have been on the run from the villainous Count Olaf […]

I’m waiting for the Baudelaires to meet the One Trick Pony (CBR12Bingo 2: No Money)

The Miserable Mill by Lemony Snicket

October 7, 2020 by octothorp Leave a Comment

Ya’ll, I’m kind of glad this was my “No Money” square because I think I’d be irritated if I spent actual money on this book. Might be my second least favorite of the series, but I found a pile of these at Goodwill for a dollar, and then used loyalty points to get them for free. I had to buy #1 because there were 2-6 present, so of course I’d pay for the one I liked the least. We’re dealing with a pretty predictable pattern […]

The root of all evil (CBR12Bingo 2: Money)

The Reptile Room by Lemony Snicket

September 17, 2020 by octothorp Leave a Comment

Well, I liked this book quite a bit more than the first one, but given that it doesn’t revolve around a guardian attempting to marry his barely teenaged ward against her will, anything would be an upgrade. Since Count Olaf has now been unmasked as dastardly, the Baudelaire orphans have been placed with their uncle Monty, a reptile enthusiast with a menagerie of snakes and lizards, including the harmless Incredibly Deadly Viper, named as a joke. Since the placement is happy and Uncle Monty is […]

Condescending, which in this case means talking down to your readers (CBR12Bingo: Fresh Starts)

The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket

August 24, 2020 by octothorp Leave a Comment

There’s a lot that I liked about this book, but the author’s affectation of using challenging words relative to the age of his audience (Yay! Do more of that!) and then defining them in a subclause (Boo! Do less of that) ends up undermining what he’s trying to do. I was a precocious reader (is there a CBR participant who wasn’t?) and the only thing I disliked more than a book too simple for my reading level was one that pretended it wasn’t. Calvin and […]
