So much for pacing myself

A Kiss for Midwinter by Courtney Milan

February 16, 2023 by ElCicco 6 Comments

After The Duchess War, I decided to take a break from Milan just so I wouldn’t finish the series too quickly. Yesterday, I started a novel that is good but kind of grim. Last night, I thought I would just take a look at the next book in the “Brothers Sinister” series, the novella A Kiss for Midwinter, and here we are. This is a holiday story that I know some Cannonballers like to reread at Christmastime, and, in the way of Milan, it offers […]

Revisiting a true favourite at Christmas time

December 27, 2017 by Malin 4 Comments

When Lydia Charingford was fifteen, she was seduced and ruined by an older man. She got pregnant, and it was only through the quick wits of her friend Minnie and the support of her family that not everyone in polite society found out about it. Lydia lost the baby, and tries very hard not to dwell on that part of her past. When Dr Jonas Grantham (the junior doctor present when she was being examined and her shame was exposed to her parents) returns to […]

A new year, an old friend of a book.

January 4, 2016 by faintingviolet 11 Comments

I had promised myself a reread of A Kiss for Midwinter this Christmas, however I didn’t get to it until this weekend, but that doesn’t matter since its a very quick read. It is Mrs. Julien’s favorite novella, possibly of all time, and one that I really enjoyed, but always felt like I was missing something. I think I’m still missing something, but this is definitely a 4.5 star book for me, and proves that Milan is fantastic at novellas (not that I didn’t already […]

You can never go wrong with puppy cannons.

When school started in September, I told myself that now that I had a little bit of free time, I was going to catch up on several things that the Cannonball community had recommended: 1. Watching the Lizzie Bennet Diaries on YouTube. 2. Reading a few books by Courtney Milan. There were simply too many 5-star reviews for me to ignore. This was a bandwagon that I needed to get on! 3. Attempt to read at least one of the Outlander books. Well, the kids have […]

A Fallen Woman and a Dark Little Raincloud Find Love

October 1, 2014 by faintingviolet 1 Comment

I admit I got behind in my reviews; I finished this one over two weeks ago. And it was a delicious quick read so having something to say is proving difficult. The third story in the Brothers Sinister books, A Kiss for Midwinter focuses on Lydia whom we met in The Duchess War, and while this story could stand on its own, I would suggest reading it in order with the other books in the series (seriously, read the series). Here’s the synopsis from Goodreads: […]

A Series of Unfortunate Brothers

February 14, 2014 by NTE 12 Comments

Last week I had a headache, and I turned off the TV, and turned on my Kindle, onto which I had previously downloaded The Governess Affair, at some point when Amazon was giving it away. And then I spent the rest of the day, and much of the night, reading the entire rest of the series. Which I know is Amazon’s sly marketing ploy – “Reel them in with one story and the simplest ‘One click here to buy the next book’ tactic” – but, […]
