I’ve been waiting to write this review for a while, partly because I wanted to review the Shades of Magic Trilogy together and I’ve only just read the third one. (And partly because I’m better at reading than writing reviews…) This series was my introduction to V. E. Schwab, although I’d encountered mentions of the trilogy for a while now in the fantasy world. Part of the reason I finally read them was my reading challenge for the first half of the year: to read […]
Schwab sticks the landing (mostly)
3.5 stars. It’s always a bit scary heading into the final book of a beloved series. Will things wrap up satisfactorily? Will my favorite characters die? Will I be able to read it again and still love it? Ideally you want it to be the best book in the series, but just not ruining the series will usually suffice. That was kind of my feeling with this one. Although I didn’t love it as much as the first two books, it was still a satisfying […]
Not the emotional wreckage I was told to expect
I was good. I really was. I didn’t peek at any reviews or sneak a look at the last page or two. I really enjoyed the first two books of the series and I didn’t want to ruin this last one. I did see some comments on social media from people who had read the book before me, and all of them were pretty similar. Everyone I’ve seen who posted about A Conjuring of Light on Twitter, Goodreads, etc. said something along the lines of […]
A good sort of series ender.
I wish I would have written this review right after I finished the book. (I should get that printed on a t-shirt.) I finished it a couple of months ago now, and as always seems to happen to me when I do this, I put off writing the review in the (vain) hopes that time will make me smarter (or something?) and words will magically appear in the review space. This never happens. Instead, I am left trying to remember what happened in the book and […]
Shades of Magic
As with my last review, this was a re-read for me as well. Well, most of it was a re-read. I had actually read the first two books of this series, A Darker Shade of Magic and A Gathering of Shadows, previously and decided to re-read them before reading the final book, A Conjuring of Light. I really enjoyed these books and what I enjoyed most are the two main characters. The first character we meet is Kell. An Antari (blood magician), Kell is from […]
Anosche.
If there was any confusion that this series could be filed under YA, A Conjuring of Light obliterates that idea swiftly. The first book introduced the world and characters, the second made us care about them, and the third puts them through absolute hell. But in a good way, closing out the Shades of Magic trilogy and earning its place as one of the greatest fantasy works of all time. Yep, it’s that good. When we last left Kell, Lila, Rhy, and all the rest […]
