Silly ol’ book

How a Bear Became a Book: The Collaboration That Created Winnie-the-Pooh by Annette Bay Pimentel

October 21, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

A clever ol’ story about a clever and silly ol’ bear is what you learn about in How a Bear Became a Book: The Collaboration That Created Winnie-the-Pooh. The pieces fit as if you’re reading a Winnie the Pooh story, the illustrations as if reading a WTP book and they come together to make a modern classic. It is less a “solid story” and more of a poetic telling of how a bear came into existence. Things are less hard facts but taking the facts […]

As per usual, I’m awful at keeping up with the review part of the Cannonball Read equation, so here’s another review dump! To begin, let’s discuss When You Trap a Tiger, one which caught my eye primarily because of its cover art and the Newberry Medal. Having liked my last pick from Target’s middle-reader end cap (A Kind of Spark) so much, I’d been making a point to check out when new books get added to the rotation there and this one in particular caught my […]

Considering Winnie the Pooh

Winnie-the-Pooh by A. A. Milne

September 20, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo Review 23: Roaring 20s I didn’t feel like a lot of drama right now; calm reading is good right now for me. So what to do for this square? Like a lot of people, I suspect, I know who-what Winnie-the-Pooh is, but I can’t remember ever having read any of the original stories, the first volume of which came out in 1926. I feel like I must have, but upon picking up that first volume of stories, Winnie-the-Pooh, they weren’t too familiar seeming; unless […]

There is more than just that silly ol’ bear

Now We Are Six by A.A. Milne

July 27, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr12bingo White WhaleWhen I was looking for a book for the Roaring 20’s, I found Now We Are Six in the process. I realized afterwards, I could have picked any book for my White Whale (I have so many) but while looking at it, I realized I have never read A.A. Milne. Or if I have (or had him read to me) I do not remember. And for $3 (minus my discount) what did I have to lose? What did I have to lose? About […]

Oh man, the feels!

February 19, 2018 by KimMiE" 6 Comments

I can’t remember a time when I didn’t love Winnie-the-Pooh. I grew up on the Disney animated versions, and even today when I step foot on a Disney property, Pooh and his friends can expect to be hugged. I’m grateful that I never picked up the books that inspired these theme park favorites until I was an adult, because they are so hilarious, so thoughtful, and so smart, the animated interpretation surely would have disappointed me if I’d been exposed to the books first. If […]

“From what I’ve read of detective stories, inspectors always do want to drag the pond first.”

The best things I can say about The Red House Mystery by A.A. Milne are that it is a tongue in cheek locked room mystery with an affable amateur sleuth hero and an amusing sidekick. This book was much more of a why-and-howdunnit than a whodunnit (which was a draw back for me), the charm of the work is more in the wit and friendship of the two main characters and their clever allusions to Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. The Sherlock and Watson stand-ins […]
