I’ll Definitely Be Reading More By This Author

Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

July 12, 2020 by Jen K 3 Comments

Bingo Square: Green (or Jade as a variation thereof) The e-book version of this was on sale back in January, and given my love of mythology, it seemed like the perfect time to try a new author and learn more about mythical figures outside the Greek and Roman pantheon. Still, the book sat quite a while before I finally picked it up. I quite enjoyed this novel – the writing style at first felt very matter of fact, in line with our no nonsense heroine, […]

Too Clever For Its Own Good

The Paragon Hotel by Lindsay Faye

July 11, 2020 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Bingo Square: The Roaring 20’s I loved Lindsay Faye’s The Gods of Gotham and already had a copy of this book – seemed like the perfect fit for the 20’s. From the topic matter and description, it was but I was incredibly disappointed with this novel, especially since it should have been my cup of tea. The narrator is Alice “Nobody” James – as the novel begins, she is on a train, heading to Portland, Oregon with a gunshot wound, fleeing her former life in […]

A middling Daisy Dalrymple story, but the characters make it worth reading

The Corpse at the Crystal Palace by Carola Dunn

April 5, 2020 by pixifer Leave a Comment

This review is specifically for The Corpse at the Crystal Palace but I’m including my thoughts on the Daisy Dalrymple series as a whole. The series takes place in England in the 1920s. The main character is Mrs. Daisy Fletcher (née the Honorable Daisy Dalrymple). Daisy is the youngest daughter of an English aristocrat and is married to Chief Inspector Alec Fletcher of the New Scotland Yard. Daisy keeps accidentally finding dead bodies and feels compelled to help Alec with his investigations. She is often […]

It Started Off Well …

The Collector's Apprentice by B.A. Shapiro

January 15, 2020 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I have to say, I was rather disappointed with this one.  I really enjoyed Shapiro’s novel The Art Forger – it wasn’t perfect, but it had me hooked, and it was entertaining, and I wanted to see what would happen.  While The Muralist wasn’t as gripping, I also enjoyed it –  of course, a historical fiction novel isn’t going to be quite as much of a page turner as a heist thriller. In this novel, Shapiro tries to merge the two, and it makes for […]

How to Talk to Nice English Girls by Gretchen Evans

October 2, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

Another book where I’ve been putting off the review, but this time because I couldn’t work up the energy to talk about it. This was a rec from KJ Charles on Goodreads (she’s a good follow for more eclectic and/or self-pubbed books) and I’m glad I picked it up, but I’m not sure I’ll read any more books by this author. It was solidly in ‘I liked this but meh’ territory. Historical f/f romance is so hard to find, and when I’ve found it, it […]

Radium…the wonder drug. Oh wait, nope.

December 5, 2018 by cheerbrarian 3 Comments

This story is the very definition of the word fantastic. It is unbelievable. If you enjoyed (though, enjoyed is a strong work) Devil in the White City or Killers of the Flower Moon, buckle up and prepare to be horrified by more actual American history. In the 1898, we discovered radium. It was great! Just neat-o. It glowed, it was heralded as a wonder drug. WHAT. YES. And, the Radium Girls were the lucky women hired to work in factories that used radium-based paint to […]
