I think it might be quite emotionally exhausting to be a twin

September 3, 2015 by Malin 5 Comments

Did you miss me, guys? I’m going to try to finally tackle the massive backlog of reviews I have (more than a quarter Cannonball at this rate), so expect much more from me in the days to come. Jude and Noah are twins and have always been very close, to the point where they seem able to communicate without words, reading each other’s minds. During the summer when they are thirteen, things are changing. Getting ready to apply to a creative arts high school, Noah […]

Abigail + Jackaby, a very good team.

August 31, 2015 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

I was introduced to this book via Malin’s review last November. She had my attention with sassy female narrator who does not have a romance with the titular Jackaby, investigator in the vein of a Cumberbatchian Sherlock or Matt Smithian Doctor Who. Add to that faerie folk, mythical creatures, the 1890s, and New England and I’m sold. And that cover art ain’t too shabby either. Your basic plot summary is as follows – Abagail Rook, our narrator, has run off with her college tuition to […]

For Gina, and Meika, and Keri – thanks for picking me up.

Jane, the Fox, and Me by Fanny Britt, Isabelle Arsenault (Illustrator), Christelle Morelli (Translator), Susan Ouriou (Translator)

My choice to read Jane, the Fox, and Me was influenced by my participation in the Read Harder Challenge. Tasks 19 and 20 are to read a work originally published in another language and a graphic novel, graphic memoir, or collection of comics of any kind. I had some other books picked out for these tasks, and I have every intention of reading them, but when bonnie and the Chancellor’s reviews of this book back in January I knew that this was something I wanted […]

Miles’ adventures in boarding school

July 17, 2015 by Malin Leave a Comment

3.5 stars Miles Halter doesn’t really have any friends in his Florida high school and persuades his parents to send him to the same boarding school in Alabama that his father once attended. When he gets there, he is quickly included in the already established circle of friends including his roommate Chip, usually referred to as the Colonel; the intense and unpredictable Alaska, whom Miles falls in love with pretty much at first sight; and Takumi, who seems like the most sane of the group. […]

West Side Story meets Sons of Anarchy

July 16, 2015 by Malin Leave a Comment

I got this review copy from NetGalley in return for a fair and unbiased review. The book is available now.  Emily lives a nice, safe, uneventful life with her mother and adopted father Once a year she meets up with her biological dad for an awkward day, usually spent shopping, but she tries not to think too much about him or his side of the family. After all, he willingly signed away his parental rights and wanted nothing to do with her as a baby, […]

Wasn’t Magical for Me

July 16, 2015 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

My adventures in short story reading continue, and I’ve reached the point where I’m convinced they aren’t for me. Not even the glorious, melodious Neil Gaiman reading his own collection, M is for Magic, to me could do the trick. I appear to be broken in some way. That’s not to say that there aren’t good stories in this collection. There are several that are quite good, just not good enough to round the collections overall rating up from a 3 star. The stories in […]
