Another awesome library trip

August 9, 2016 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I’ve known about this book for a while and I finally got around to getting Ink and Bone from my own local library. I’m glad it was on the top of the pile. So in this world, the ancient library of Alexandria was never lost or destroyed. Instead it becomes the entity which rules the world as it controls all knowledge. To this end, personal ownership of books is forbidden. People are allowed access to certain titles via notebooks that function like modern tablets called […]

That Was Definitely Not What I Thought It Would Be

August 9, 2016 by Lisa Bee Leave a Comment

The progression of this story was pretty unexpected, and not entirely in a good way, to be honest. This YA novel begins in a slow-burning fashion, focusing largely on the main character, Seth, and his memories: very character-driven. Yet about a third of the way in, there is quite a twist, that changes the whole tone of the novel, and ultimately leaves more questions and confusion at the end of everything. There is the sense that Patrick Ness is trying to create an ambiguous ending for the reader […]

Insightful YA

August 8, 2016 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

I voted for this for the CBR book club, because it’s been on my to-read list for a couple of years and I knew this would be the motivation I needed. And I’m so glad it was selected, because this was really a great book. I didn’t entirely know what to expect, but I think the chapter early on (was it the second one) really set the tone. He talks about the worst thing about being poor wasn’t being hungry; it was not being able […]

I made you a tape of a great album by a British Band called ABC

August 8, 2016 by Jenny S Leave a Comment

I can’t tell if this novel is really good or if it just hit all my nostalgia buttons—hit them hard.  First of all, this young adult novel is a novel of letters—actual letters—not e-mails or texts or Instagram photos—between Cath and Scott.  This made me think of all the letters I wrote when I went off to college—to friends back home and later, during the summer, to friends I had made at school.  These letters were written on stationary of various kinds as well as […]

My CBR8 YA Book Club Review

August 3, 2016 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

I didn’t read a lot of YA books when I was, in fact, a young adult. My AP English classes in high school and the Literature classes I took in college focused on the “Classics” and more adult material because we were supposed to be the smart kids. I didn’t read as much in my free time because I always had something to be reading for one class or the other, and when I did read for fun it was a lot of “chick lit” […]

I finished this so long ago, I can’t even think of a clever title

August 2, 2016 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

I finished this audiobook over a month ago, and the review was sitting here mostly done, but I just never finished it.  I didn’t care about this book enough to post the mostly shitty review. Meh. I think part of the reason I disliked this book was the reader.  She irritated me to no end. The sections from Patience Madden’s point of view sounded like she was both terrified and on the brink of tears.  You are led to believe that she has gained some […]
