So this is yet another great read thanks to all of you lovelies. I would never in a million years have picked this one up, but when y’all keep raving I reconsider (as long as it’s not horror, I don’t do horror). The audiobook version is great, and I was immensely entertained for a few days in the car. This is the story of Willowdean Dixon. Willowdean is a teenager in small town Texas just trying to make it through high school. She has a […]
Maddy was a bubble girl, yet there was no mention of the Moops.
Madeline is 18 years old and lives in a bubble. Literally. She has an auto-immune disease and has spent her entire life in a germ-free environment. Her house has an air lock and a decontamination chamber. She takes classes via Skype and her only companions are her mother and her nurse, Carla. Olly moves in next door and immediately becomes an obsession for Maddy. He’s handsome and full of energy. He’s funny and wants to know more about her, and soon they find themselves chatting […]
Comfortable diversion, but the audio version is a must-listen.
*Spoilers follow* I saw the movie How to Train Your Dragon in the theatre, and absolutely fell in love with it. I loved the world, thought the characters were fun and relatable, and was absolutely blown away by the art, but the stand-out for me was the dragon Toothless. But I loved everything. I thought the tumultuous relationship between Hiccup and his father felt authentic, if a little on the absurd side (this is a cartoon, after all), and Hiccup’s role as an outsider felt […]
In which I try not to let my personal pickiness ruin a good book
3.5 stars I can recognize a good book when I see one. The Absolutely True Diary… is touching, thoughtful, considered, and funny. It features a unique protagonist who is fleshed out honestly and whose diverse perspective (drawn from Sherman Alexie’s own experiences) is a valuable addition to the YA landscape. I came away from reading this book not just with an abstractly increased sense of empathy, but with an actual education. Should this book be widely read and roundly discussed? Yes, absolutely. Did I “enjoy” […]
When mom is gone
This is not a book that I had been meaning to read, but it’s the first 7th grade reading assignment for this year, and I figured I might be able to help my son a bit if I read it too. Oy! I was not prepared for the gut punch of this story and I wonder what kind of conversations it will generate amongst 12 year olds. Walk Two Moons is the story of Salamanca Tree Hiddle and her family falling apart. She’s just a […]
Double Cannonball with Madeleine L’Engle
Woo hoo! Double cannonball for me! I actually cannot remember how many weeks ago I read this book (sad, I know). I’m pretty sure I can make it to a triple Cannonball with a spare bit of change, but a quadruple is looking pretty out-of-reach for me at this point. I’m not complaining. It’s been a good year of reading so far. And I’m delighted I got to reach this point with a L’Engle book. Dragons in the Waters is the second O’Keefe family saga. […]
