Going Outside is Highly Overrated

September 8, 2016 by AkBeagle 1 Comment

This book has been reviewed by other, more eloquent, cannonballers but I really enjoyed the book so I will take a whack at it. Another YA dystopian novel, but so much more.  I  have had this sitting on my to be read pile for a long time.  Stranger Things sent me on an 80s nostalgia trip and finally got this novel moved up to the top of the list.  Set in 2044, the world has become a terrible place.  People escape the horror of everyday life […]

The troubled love story of Rhubarb and Orange Slice is one that I’m glad I read.

I’m not ashamed to admit that I’ve read every single stinking Shopaholic book by Sophie Kinsella. I know that Becky’s ridiculous adventures aren’t great literature. But I find them somewhat comforting. I know Becky will make a horrible decision about something, wear fabulous clothes, do ridiculous things with her friends, make questionable parenting choices, and be rescued by her sensible husband who helps her to realize that her horrible decision was actually a great idea in the end. When I heard that Kinsella had recently […]

A Not Bad but Not Great Double-Header of One Author

September 8, 2016 by Lisa Bee Leave a Comment

One of my favourite books I read last year was Benjamin Alire Sáenz’s beautiful Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe. I just fell in love with the soft, intimate voice that Alire Sáenz had, and the story really touched some personal themes from my own life. Consequently, I decided to take a look at some more of his work, but this time in the realm of different subject matter (though I believe all would be considered within the young-adult genre). The first, […]

How to Suck All the Life Out of Original Worldbuilding

September 6, 2016 by Alexis 2 Comments

The Arcana Chronicles began with an interesting premise: young adults with fantastic powers who battle it out in an “there can be only one” apocalypse battle of the fittest. And because it’s Kresley Cole it’s full of sexy characters who smolder. And of course the obligatory YA love triangle. The whole thing is loosely built upon the idea of each character = tarot card. Basically it was my catnip. Now we’re four books in on a series that doesn’t seem like it’ll end soon. Or […]

Get off my lawn, you little punk

September 6, 2016 by badkittyuno 2 Comments

This may be because I’m an old lady of almost 31, but I really don’t like these YA novels where the kids spend the whole time huffing paint and vandalizing shit. A lot of bad stuff happens to the protagonist of Punkzilla, but after each event I kind felt like…well, he deserved it! Presented as a series of unmailed letters, Punkzilla is the story of teenage runaway Jamie, who’s trying his best to make it from Portland, Oregon to Memphis in time to see his older brother […]

I Hated the Photographs

September 5, 2016 by KM Bezner 3 Comments

I’m pretty stoked for this movie in the fall. Naturally, I figured I would sate my excitement by reading the book, which seemed like a great plan at the time. And I really, really wanted to like it…unfortunately, I didn’t.
