Disappointing for Disney Princess fans
I’m always in the market for a new graphic novel, so when I was browsing at my local library Monica Gallagher’s Part-Time Princesses jumped out at me. I was intrigued. Look, I am a proud feminist and all, but I love pink, and I unapologetically enjoy me some Disney Princesses. I like Cinderella, because she’s plucky and kind and resourceful. I love Belle, because she’s bookish and ambitious. And I definitely adore Mulan, because she’s loyal and brave and willing to stand for family honor, […]
Scooby-Doo Meets Nancy Drew
Texas Gothic by Rosemary Clement-Moore (Ember, 2011) reads like something written by Zane Grey after an all-night peyote bender and Veronica Mars marathon. It mashes up tropes from a half-dozen different genres–the plucky girl detective, the hot cowboy, the lost Spanish goldmine, the restless ghost–and gently pokes fun at itself for doing so. In another writer’s hands, the book could have been a disjointed mess, but Clement-Moore’s breezy, self-aware style manages to pull it all together into a mostly enjoyable read. What’s it about? During […]
Rae Carson is one of the best YA authors out there
It’s official! Rae Carson can do no wrong. This trilogy was an utter delight and I plan on making as many people read it as possible. Over the past three books, these characters have become true friends and I’m a little lost now that the series is over. I have a feeling that these will become comfort reads in the same way that Harry Potter and a few other favorite books have. *** Spoilers below if you haven’t read the first book *** 3.5 Stars […]
How I Found a Manic Pixie Dream Boy in a YA Novel
In The Odds of Loving Grover Cleveland, Rebekah Crane, author of two other YA novels (Playing Nice and Aspen) tells the story of 16 year old Zander Osborne and her adventures at Camp Padua – a summer getaway for troubled teens. Zander narrates the story but does not initially tell us why her parents sent her to camp. There, she meets a cast of characters with their own set of problems and secrets, largely made up of distinctive traits rather than actual personalities. Cassie […]
This book is the reason I love science fiction.
Okay, first, I feel like I need to preface this review by confessing that if I had read this book for the first time at age thirty-one, I wouldn’t be giving it five stars. My rating is entirely colored by my intense nostalgic feelings of love for it. As an adult reading it as a part of an ongoing series, this is a solid book that does some really cool things. But for a kid who’d never read any science-fiction before, this book absolutely GOBSMACKED […]
