You’re not allowed to cry. It’s one of the rules.

January 13, 2017 by JCoppercorn 4 Comments

Few things are as satisfying as starting a book and realizing you’re going to sit there and read it straight through.  It is such a wonderful moment where you know this is your life’s purpose for the next few hours and you can measure your next bit of existing by the number of pages the author has handed to you.  It didn’t take me long to know I’d be with Aristotle and Dante and Sáenz until the last word. Ari is 15.  He’s bored and miserable. […]

“Stories are the wildest things of all”

January 13, 2017 by Caitlin_D 4 Comments

This one packs a wallop in a short amount of time. I have been lucky that, even as an adult, I don’t have a lot of experience watching a loved one suffer for a long time from cancer or any other illness. In a Monster Calls thirteen year old Conor O’Malley, unfortunately, doesn’t have that blessing; his mother has been suffering from some form of cancer for an indeterminate amount of time. His grandmother comes to visit because it has been decided, since Conor’s father lives […]

Angels and Demons

January 12, 2017 by yesknopemaybe 2 Comments

A few years ago I tried to read this and gave up in the first 20 pages because I was just not in the mood. I’m so glad I gave this a second try because it was a delight. Once the story got going, I could not stop listening (I opted for the audiobook version). Let’s just say there were some late nights involved and I seriously considered calling in sick to work. Karou is a teenager going to art school in Prague. At least, […]

Pride and Prejudice and Practical Magic

January 12, 2017 by Emperor Cupcake 5 Comments

When I first discovered historical fantasy (or mannerpunk, or whatever you want to call it), I felt the way I imagine a person does when stumbling upon a hitherto unknown sexual kink. Oh wow, I did not know this was a thing, but I LIKE it! Marissa Doyle’s debut novel, Bewitching Season, is a light and frothy confection that (if I’m being honest) wasn’t quite as good as I remember it. This book and its sequel, both published in 2009, follow the stories of the […]

“We are all a collection of lost causes, stashed here so no one has to see just how wounded we are.”

January 11, 2017 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

Warning up front: this book centers around a girl in treatment for an eating disorder, so this may not be the right review/book for you to read. “The thing was, I needed to be owned. I needed someone to say, This girl is mine. That´s what family is for, but mine was almost gone. There was no one to claim me but Eden and my sickness. So I gave myself to both.” In Paperweight, our protagonist Stevie (which is my favorite new nickname for Stephanie) […]

Young Adult Twist on You’ve Got Mail

January 11, 2017 by Classic 2 Comments

Please note that I gave this book 3.5 stars.  So all in all I really liked this book. It was cute, and was a great little homage to You’ve Got Mail, which was a great homage to The Shop Around the Corner. I read this for Romance Bingo 2017 and this fits my Young Adult square. Told in the first person, we have Lily, a teenage girl who has a chaotic (but loving) home life, and only has one best friend. Lily plays guitar and […]
