Historical Fantasy Takes a Weird Turn

February 10, 2017 by Emperor Cupcake Leave a Comment

I finally got around to re-reading Betraying Season, the sequel to Bewitching Season, and now I remember why I was so reluctant to tackle this one again. Not only is it not particularly good, but it’s also weird. If the first book is a pleasant afternoon tea in a sunlit parlor, then the sequel is more like gnawing on stale fried chicken by the light of the full moon–odd, unsatisfying, and more than a little off-putting to witness. After her twin sister marries at the […]

For a moment, the world stopped.

This is a review for the fourth book in the Throne of Glass series. I listened to the audiobook version. First off, I really like the narrator. I think she adds a lot to the books in this series. (They are very long books and I think would become a bit tedious at times were it not for the dynamic narration.) It also helps to not have to figure out how to pronounce the names in this one… Warning, there will be some minor spoilers […]

Boo to Young Love

February 8, 2017 by Classic 4 Comments

Please note that I gave this book zero stars, however, I rounded it up to 1 star here.  I read this for Romance Book Bingo 2017: Insta-love square.  This is going to be a bit ranty so I apologize in advance. I loathed this book. From beginning to end. I can’t believe that a movie that I enjoyed spun off from this source material. I think at one time I wonder how many times Nick said the “f” word and decided I was too lazy […]

In which I grew rapidly more disappointed by a book I was sure I was well on my way to loving

February 7, 2017 by alwaysanswerb 3 Comments

This was one of those books where my reactions to it fell mostly in the extremes, and there are going to be SPOILERS so I can talk about freely about the missteps. I was immediately drawn in by Annabel and the obvious tension in her. She had been recently ostracized by her former best friend, popular mean girl Sophie, and her life at home is also fragile, between a sister currently recovering from an eating disorder and a mother who has a history of depression. […]

You can keep my future, it will probably do you more good than me

February 4, 2017 by Emmalita 2 Comments

A few days ago I read J’s review of Memories of Ash, the second book in a new, on-going series of YA fantasy novels. J wants Cannonballers to read it, so I picked up the first book, Sunbolt. After I finished Sunbolt, I saw there was a free short story, The Bone Knife, so I scooped that up too. Sunbolt is a very fast read. I enjoyed it. Khanani keeps the action focused on her protagonist Hitomi and mostly leaves the world building for the reader to glean […]

Not as Good as P.S. I Like You

February 4, 2017 by Classic Leave a Comment

I am so annoyed. I got this book because I enjoyed Kasie West’s other book I just finished, “P.S. I Like You.” This book made me wonder if I made a mistake in thinking that I may have found another YA author to follow. The plot did not make a lot of sense. I did not care for the main character. I seriously wondered why the love interest even kept hanging out with her, because she ran hot/cold towards him and also was rude. The […]
