4.5 stars This is the second book in a trilogy. While readers could start with this one, I would recommend that they start at the beginning with book 1, Every Breath. There may be mild spoilers for the first book in the series in this review, so if you want to go in completely cold, skip this until you’re caught up. Rachel Watts has pretty severely grounded after the events that led to both her and her new boyfriend (also her neighbour from two doors’ […]
Jane Austen meets dragons–it’s good, I promise.
Historically, I’ve always been skeptical of Pride and Prejudice or anything by Jane Austen being sequel-ized or remade, though I’ve started to realize that it’s not a hard-and-fast rule. I do enjoy some Austen adaptations—but it’s more about treatment and approach than fidelity to the story. Sometimes, a cracking good Austen adaptation is about how you transmute the story’s major ideas into a totally different world and create something that’s a nod to the original while giving us a new story with new ideas. I’m […]
Grounded, imaginative YA fantasy.
Another Little Piece is a refreshingly original YA story that not only explores a completely different supernatural angle but is also, notably, not a trilogy, and therefore has an obviously different plot arc and pacing from so many of its contemporaries. If you’re looking for moody, supernatural YA fantasy that has nothing to do with a teen girl being seduced by some sort of undead man-teen, this book is for you. From Goodreads, because I have like 9 thousand reviews to catch up on and […]
Fascinating YA sci-fi dystopia, needs a little work on the characters.
Various internet peoples have been telling me to read Neal Shusterman for years now, and with Scythe he finally published a book whose premise I couldn’t resist, so here we are. If the rest of his books are as well thought out as this one was, they’re definitely getting moved up my TBR. Scythe takes place several hundred years in the future, after humanity has conquered mortality and disease*, and humans are functionally immortal. But having humanity immortal but still procreating creates an obvious problem. […]
WTF did I just read? A spoiler-filled rant.
I’ve read a whole bunch of reviews of More Than This over the past few years, but none of them ever really say what that book is about. Everyone talks about how much they like Patrick Ness, and that he really nails the voice of a troubled teen. But nobody mentions the plot of this book. For good reason, I’ve learned. I just finished reading this and I’m going to be spilling some spoilers. So really, don’t read this if you ever plan on picking […]
Everything in its Right Place
Miranda is a sixth-grader, living in New York City. Her best friend is a neighbor boy named Sal, and they spend almost all their time together. When the book opens, Miranda and Sal are starting to part ways for reasons that she doesn’t fully understand. Her mother is auditioning for a game show, and there’s a crazy homeless guy on her corner that scares her. Suddenly she starts getting anonymous notes from someone who seems to know things about her that shouldn’t be possible. This […]
