Read all four, you’ll be glad you did.

The Giver was a recent selection for a book club I’m in, and so when I picked up my copy I figured I might as well get the ‘quartet’ edition that also has the other three books that follow: Gathering Blue, Messenger, and Son. I don’t read a ton of YA fiction, so these were nice quick palate cleansers after The Devourers. 😉 THE GIVER (Book #1) The world that Jonas lives in is a carefully orchestrated and controlled society. Families are created in labs, […]

Unpacking the ripple effects of a shooting

March 11, 2017 by bonnie Leave a Comment

I’m always on the lookout for diverse books, especially if they are culturally relevant. The Chancellor recommended me two books: Kekla Magoon’s How It Went Down and Angie Thomas’s The Hate You Give. I’m currently reading the latter, so you’ll get to read my review later this weekend (I hope), but I just finished the former, and it was an interesting, engaging, thought-provoking book. Tariq Johnson leaves a convenience store buying groceries, when the owner chases after him, shouting, “Come back!” A white man stops […]

Super fast, enjoyable, YA alternate present… READ IT!

March 10, 2017 by SandyLemons Leave a Comment

I read (a lot) of books in this genre: YA teen in an alternate present/near future often dystopian… usually there’s a boy involved (I prefer when that is not the primary story line) and the girl is a “chosen one” or “special” or something. Anyways, I do not know how I had not seen this series until now. If you’re into this genre, you should read this one. It was a super quick read and I’m ready for the second tonight! (It is also free […]

Dammit, Brashares!

March 10, 2017 by badkittyuno 5 Comments

I’ve been vacillating between rating this book poorly because it’s manipulative, or highly because its manipulation freaking worked on me. So we’re going with 3 stars — but I have thoughts! I’m also going to spoil the main thing that happens, but it happens towards the beginning and you can kind of see it coming so I think it’s not too spoiler-y. “You get older and you learn there is one sentence just four worlds long and if you can say it to yourself it […]

“Because you’ll never meet me and it’s the closest we can get.”

March 10, 2017 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

I really enjoyed this book, both before and after the bizarre twist that occurs. Reading some other reviews on Goodreads, it seems like most people either loved the twist, too, or let it destroy their opinion of the book. I personally felt the twist was hinted at well enough through the first part to make it less shocking and more expected, but I’m also reading The Rook right now, so my head’s in a weird place. If you’re at all interested in reading this book, I […]

When not reading plot synopses bites you in the ass

March 8, 2017 by ingres77 2 Comments

I saw a book with a monster in the cover. I saw a book with “monster” in the title. I saw a book that was popular. And I never bothered to find out what it was about. “I should be more open”, I said. “Try new things,” I said. “Expand your horizons,” I said. Oh yeah. Read the kinds of books I never would have had I not joined this wonderful community. Which has been a largely successful modus operandi in my three years, here. Even […]
