The way audiobooks should be

April 8, 2017 by crystalclear 1 Comment

This is an awesome audiobook production!  Tamora Pierce, the author, reads the narration, but all of the characters have different actors who voice them.  And they do an awesome job!  (Honestly, Tamora Pierce sounds a little stodgy, like she’s reading to a child, and you can tell she’s very deliberate with her words and annunciation.  But hey, she’s not a voice actor, and it creates a noticeable difference between the narration and the actors. And you get used to it!) (In listening to the interview at […]

“I fear I may be forced to declare ‘shenanigans’!”

April 8, 2017 by crystalclear 2 Comments

This is funny, guys!  And well-written!  (At least to me it is.)  We have R. F. Jackaby, an American Sherlock type who can see things that others can’t.  Not just notice things others don’t, but things others physically cannot comprehend.  There’s magic here, and Jackaby has a gift.  And just like Sherlock, a lot of people thing Jackaby is crazy.  Or on drugs.  “All the world’s a stage, as they say, and I seem to have the only seat in the house with view behind […]

Countless alternate dimensions, one very special teenager

April 7, 2017 by Malin Leave a Comment

3.5 stars Marguerite Caine’s parents are both genius physicist and have invented a device that allows the user to jump between alternate dimensions, by basically inhabiting the body of the alternate version of themselves. Before the device could be properly tested, however, Marguerite’s father is killed in a car accident and her parents’ research assistant, Paul Markov, has disappeared into another dimension with the only finished Firebird device. Her parents’ other assistant, Theo Beck, has luckily kept two of the early prototypes of the device […]

Descendants cover

In which I learn I am definitely over the YA love triangle

April 6, 2017 by J Leave a Comment

“There are lots of stories about the children of gods. But what about those cursed by the gods, and their descendants…” This line is catnip. This is story I definitely want to read. This is not quite the story Descendants tells. The set-up: El has lived a safe, if sheltered life, raised with her grandparents in a country cottage. Her grandparents keep her away from others because El has a gift: she has powers of persuasion she cannot control. She works part-time as a docent at […]

Andrew Smith & A.S. King lovers should try this one

April 5, 2017 by badkittyuno 2 Comments

More YA! Are you sick of me yet? I have 2 more reviews to post after this and then I promise to leave y’all alone. This is what happens when I bring six books on vacation and read every one of them… “To me, religion is the Walmart of spirituality … I mean it’s prepackaged. Lowest common denominator. People just have to follow the present motions and rituals and rules. The don’t have to think about how the words reconcile with their own hearts. Their […]

Ignore the terrible puns — it’s really pretty good

April 5, 2017 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

More YA! Can you tell I recently went on a trip? YA gets me through the airport and onto the plane without losing my mind. Thank you, YA! This was a sweet and funny story about a girl who has literally done nothing but be a ballerina her entire life. Now, just short of graduating high school, she has discovered that it’s not something she can do for the rest of her life. In a panic over a ballet (and also a boy, because this is […]
